Top Class Actions viewers report receiving checks from a Michigan Condé Nast magazine subscriber info class action settlement, worth as much as $82.63.
A $13.75 million settlement resolved claims that media giant Condé Nast violated Michigan’s Preservation of Personal Privacy Act by sharing subscriber information with third parties.
Publications covered in the Michigan Condé Nast class action settlement include: Allure, Architectural Digest, Bon Appétit, Brides, Condé Nast Traveler, Footwear News, Glamour, Golf Digest, Golf World, GQ, Lucky, Self, Teen Vogue, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue, W, Wired, and Women’s Wear Daily.
Class Members for the Condé Nast class action settlement included Michigan consumers who had a subscription to one of the above Condé Nast publications between July 20, 2009 and July 30, 2016.
The settlement deal does not establish any wrongdoing by Condé Nast. The two parties determined to come to a settlement agreement to avoid further costs and risks associated with litigation. Additionally, the settlement presented an opportunity to provide compensation for allegedly affected Class Members.
Condé Nast explained why they chose to settle the privacy claims in a statement on the subscriber info class action settlement website, saying “While Condé Nast believes that its practices were in compliance with Michigan law, Condé Nast chose to settle this case, without admitting liability, to focus time, effort and resources on continuing to provide valued content to its readers, as the organization has since its founding, and not on additional legal fees and the uncertainty of litigation.”
The class representative received $10,000 for her role in the Michigan Condé Nast class action lawsuit, and attorneys received around one third of the settlement fund for fees and expenses.
Customers had claimed that Condé Nast knowingly violated subscriber privacy by selling their info to third parties. Allegedly, this was done in the interest of increasing Condé Nast’s profits but caused financial injury and inconvenience to customers.
Allegedly, had they known that the company would sell their info, many customers would not have purchased a magazine subscription or would not have paid as much as they did for it.
The deadline to file a claim in the Michigan Condé Nast privacy class action settlement was April 20, 2019.
