Checks from a freight forwarding class action settlement have been sent out, according to reports from Top Class Actions viewers.
Some of our readers are receiving checks worth as much as $7,495.70 as a result of their claims with the freight forwarding class action settlement.
Individuals who are receiving payments previously filed a valid claim with settlements aimed to resolve claims that freight forwarding companies conspired together to artificially fix their prices at higher levels.
Freight forwarding services help organize the movement of goods from a manufacturer to the market or its final distribution location.
Some freight forwarding companies handle shipping items across the world via airplanes and ships while others focus on transporting goods by rail and truck services.
A class action was filed against freight forwarding companies by several businesses that used their services. A full list of the freight forwarding companies in question is available on the settlement website.
The complaint argued that companies fixed the prices of charges and surcharges associated with their services, meaning that customers were forced to pay a higher price than they would have if the prices were not fixed.
The price-fixing scheme allegedly affected routes between the United States and China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
The class action lawsuit claims against these companies violated antitrust laws through their scheme. The companies have denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the claims against them in order to avoid the risks, costs, and time drain associated with continuing litigation through a trial verdict.
The settlements were approved to benefit businesses or individuals who purchased freight forwarding services from any of the defendants between Jan. 1, 2001 and Jan. 4, 2011.
In total, the court approved three rounds of freight forwarding settlements. The first round of 10 settlements totaled $105,611,864.00, a second round of 19 settlements totaled $197,623,497.64, and a third final round of two settlements totaled $53,550,000. As of the third round of settlements, all of the claims in the freight forwarding class action lawsuit have been resolved.
The deadline to file a claim in the freight forwarding class action settlement’s first round was Aug. 24, 2015. The second round deadline was March 31, 2016 and the third round deadline was April 3, 2017.
