Top Class Actions viewers are receiving checks in the mail from an XL Foods E. coli contamination class action settlement, worth as much as $1,700.
XL Foods agreed to pay $4 million to settle allegations that beef products processed at a facility in Alberta, Canada resulted in a 2012 E. coli recall.
Customers claimed that the company was negligent, and this resulted in the E. coli contamination.
According to a class action lawsuit, the company was particularly negligent in the design and implementation of control, sampling and testing procedures.
XL Foods was also reportedly sloppy in how the company managed the product recall.
People who have been exposed to E. coli typically show shows symptoms within one to 10 days after exposure. Symptoms may include: severe stomach cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, headache, and little or no fever. In more serious cases, kidney failure, seizures and stroke can result.
Those who were eligible to receive compensation from the XL Foods E. coli settlement are all individuals in the U.S. and Canada who purchased recalled XL Beef for their private, non-commercial consumption and suffered an economic loss or consumed recalled XL Beef and suffered a physical illness or injury as a result.
Class Members who submitted a proof of purchase received a full refund, while those who submitted a claim without a receipt received $25 CDN.
The deadline to file a claim in the XL Foods E. coli contamination class action settlement was Aug. 17, 2016.,
