Consumers who don’t want to break the bank this holiday season can have a fun time from the comfort of their own home while enjoying a variety of different holiday-themed activities.
Staying home can also help people avoid crowds, potentially inclement weather and impulse purchases during what could already be a cash-strapped holiday season.
For purchases consumers do make, however, it is important to hold onto receipts to protect from falling victim to identity theft and strengthen a potential claim against a business that may have printed too much information on them.
Consumers can save money by making crafts this holiday season
One cost-friendly activity consumers can do at home this holiday season is making decorations, such as ornaments and decorative wreaths.
If decorating wreaths, a consumer will want to make sure they have wire cutters, a wreath base, hot glue, sharp scissors, ribbon, deco mesh, gardening gloves, greenery, pine cones and a bow maker, among other things.
For ornament-making, individuals will need craft wire, a variety of ribbons, a hot glue gun and a good pair of scissors.
Consumers could also host a holiday craft party where guests make gingerbread houses, felt mistletoe branches or build a christmas countdown clock or holiday keepsake box, among other things.
If choosing to host a holiday craft party, the host will want to make sure they have enough supplies, such as construction paper, glitter, scissors, card stock, paper plates, poster board, scissors, crayons or markers.
Karaoke a fun, inexpensive activity during the holidays
Karaoke is another fun and inexpensive activity consumers can do this holiday season, with a number of different classic holiday hits to choose from, such as “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey, a five-time Grammy award winner.
Holiday revelers who would rather sing an older track could also choose to pipe out the Bing Crosby classic “White Christmas,” “Santa Baby” by Earth Kitt or “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms.
For guests who want to sing with a partner, some popular holiday duets are “White Christmas” by Michael Buble and Shania Twain, “Winter Wonderland/Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Pentatonix and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Christina Aguilera and Brian McKnight.
Some tips when performing karaoke include focusing on the song, maintaining a good stage presence, choosing a song that is within one’s vocal range and, most importantly, having fun with it.
Gift-wrapping contest can keep holiday revelers happy for cheap
Consumers could also save money this holiday season while having fun by hosting a gift-wrapping party or contest.
Before throwing the party, the host might want to pick a color scheme for the party, stock up on gift wrapping supplies such as bows, decorative tape and glue, put out foods and beverages and create a festive atmosphere by wrapping up household items.
A host may also want to put together a holiday-themed music playlist to get their guests into the holiday spirit.
Viewing holiday movies fun, inexpensive for whole family
One classic holiday activity that won’t put too much strain on the wallet is watching movies from streaming services such as YouTube, Hulu, Netflix or Amazon.
A consumer could also decide to break out old DVDs or VHS tapes and watch holiday classics such as “Miracle on 34th Street,” “A Christmas Story,” “Meet Me In St. Louis,” “A Christmas Carol,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” among others.
Baking holiday treats makes use of dough without spending too much of it
Another way to have a good time this holiday season without spending too much dough is getting in the kitchen and baking some classic treats, such as cookies, cakes and puddings.
Prior to baking, consumers will want to make sure they are stocked up on supplies, including flour, baking soda, baking powder, yeast, confectioner’s sugar, granulated sugar and cocoa powder.
Some baked goods to make during the holidays include Baked Alaska, fruitcake, sticky toffee pudding, bourbon balls, candy cane cookies, buttermilk pecan pralines and fudge, among a number of other festive treats.
