Dozens of children and their parents had to be hospitalized after a chemical leak at a Texas water park Saturday.
The incident began around 2:30 p.m. in a children’s pool at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown in Spring, Texas, ABC News reported.
Six Flags is not currently facing legal action over the leak, but Top Class Actions follows incidents like this closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits
A lifeguard and several guests were the first to get sick. The local fire service told reporters that children and their parents began experiencing “respiratory issues,” and 28 people were taken to hospital.
At least one child, age three, had to stay overnight in hospital. The child was in “stable” condition on Sunday, fire officials told reporters.
Testing revealed the water the kids and parents had been swimming in had a chemical makeup of 35 percent sulfuric acid and 10 to 13 percent bleach, chemicals used to clean pools, ABC reported.
While more than 65 people were exposed to the strong chemicals, no one suffered chemical burns.
Six Flags representatives told ABC there had been a “vapor release” in an outdoor section of the park. The park will be closed until Wednesday for an investigation.
Meanwhile, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo told ABS the park is meant to have systems in place to alert to pH imbalances in the water.
“If you can have 60-plus people get sick, and your system doesn’t catch it … then clearly something is wrong with the system,” she said.
Last month, Six Flags agreed to pay $36 million to end a class action lawsuit claiming the company violated Illinois state law when it forced visitors to its Gurnee location to provide a fingerprint scan to enter the park.
If approved, the proposed settlement would end a class action lawsuit claiming Six Flags violated the Illinois Biometric Privacy Act (BIPA) by collecting fingerprint scans at the park entrance.
