Zithromax Z-Pak Side Effects Lead to Lawsuits

One of the most popular antibiotics prescribed in the U.S. is Zithromax, a 5-day course of medication that’s popularly known as Z-Pak and generically as azithromycin. The drug has come under scrutiny lately following a recent study linking Zithromax to life-threatening side effects. Complications from the antibiotic have led to a surge in lawsuits filed against Pfizer by victims who say they were never warned about these risks. In addition to personal injury lawsuits and class action lawsuits, several wrongful death lawsuits have also been filed against Pfizer.

Zithromax Z-Pak Side Effects

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients using Zithromax, Z-Pak or azithromycin are twice as likely to die from a heart attack or sudden cardiac event compared to those on the antibiotic amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, or no drug. Researchers found 29 Zithromax heart-related deaths reported between 1992 and 2006.

In response to the study, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement on the risk of Zithromax heart attack and death on May 17, 2012, indicating that the agency is reviewing the results of the study. The FDA warned healthcare professionals to be aware for the potential for QT interval prolongation and heart arrhythmias when prescribing Zithromax, Z-Pak or azithromycin.

Other Zithromax Z-Pak side effects may include:

* Heart attack

* Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)

* Liver failure

* Trachoma/eye infection/blindness

* Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS)

* Cardiovascular problems
