When we purchase furniture for our homes, one of the very basic expectations is that the furniture is safe—especially for our children. However, some furniture pieces pose more of a risk than others.
Indeed, the Mainstays dresser sold at Walmart stores all across the country and manufactured by Ameriwood Home has been linked with a substantial dresser tip over risk. A recall was issued over the dresser tip over risk, affecting approximately 1.6 million dressers all over the country.
Have you purchased an Ameriwood dresser affected by the recall? If you didn’t get what you paid for (that is, a safe dresser without a dangerous tip-over hazard) you may be eligible for compensation.
Dresser Tip Over Risk
More and more furniture tip over injuries are being reported, the vast majority of which involve children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found in 2016 that more than 30,000 Americans visited the emergency room because of furniture tip over injuries. This report drew attention from consumer advocates concerned that furniture companies may have failed to take proper precautions in ensuring the safety of consumers.
Children are at particular risk for these kinds of furniture tip over injuries. Indeed, around 84 percent of reported fatalities from furniture tip over injuries involved children. Children are often injured by climbing a dresser or knocking over a TV. Seniors also face significant danger from furniture tip over injuries.
The CPSC encourages consumers to anchor any furniture that may be in danger of tipping over to the wall. Unfortunately, some furniture and appliances may not be safe even when consumers have taken such precautions. There may be additional dangers of large furniture and other household items that can be attributed dangerous manufacture and design.
Walmart’s Ameriwood Mainstays Dresser Recall
The popular Ameriwood dresser—sold at Walmart and a slew of other retailers for about $60—has unfortunately been linked with a high dresser tip over risk, in some cases leading to injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that at least one child, four years old, has been injured by an Ameriwood dresser that toppled over.
According to the CPSC, if left unattached to the wall, the Ameriwood dresser can be dangerous, “posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children.” It was this risk, the CPSC says, that led to the recall of around 1.6 million Ameriwood dressers in September 2017. Consumers with an Ameriwood dresser not anchored to the wall have been asked to stop using it, as well as keep children away from it.
Ameriwood is offering free repair kits for the affected Ameriwood dresser units. These repair kits include a device to anchor the unit to the wall.
