Owners of a GMC Sierra 1500 from model year 2015 may be affected by a GM recall addressing possible failure of the power steering system.
According to General Motors, the power steering system in the GMC Sierra 1500 and other affected trucks and SUVs has been implicated in 30 accidents with two known injuries to date. The possibility exists that the problem has contributed to other collisions that have not yet come to light.
The power steering system in the affected 2015 vehicles has been reported to cease operating suddenly. When this happens in the GMC Sierra 1500 and associated recall trucks and SUVs, the driver may have a momentary loss of control. This failure is especially a problem during a low-speed turn, according to a Motor Trend article.
Another Recent GM Recall
The 2015 model-year power steering recall of the GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban, Silverado, Tahoe, and Cadillac Escalade is not the only electrical system problem reported in recent years. Just last year in August 2017, GMC chose to recall vehicles for a similar issue with the power steering for model year 2014. This recall affected 700,000 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado trucks.
The National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) says of the recalls that the problem with the power steering is related to the software and electrical systems in the trucks and SUVs. A spokesperson for GM has indicated that a rapid decrease in voltage can occur if there is poor connectivity and other systems requiring amps are pulling on the electrical resources at the same time.
The NHTSA says that when power steering becomes disabled, the failure might be indicated by a dashboard light. The opposite could also be true, however, where because of the electrical failure there are no lights coming on at all. In addition to dashboard lights, other systems could fail as well such as the air conditioning, power door-locking mechanisms, warning bells, and cruise control features.
GM’s plan for managing this most recent recall of model year 2015 will be to notify all owners of associated recall vehicles of record. Owners will be instructed to bring their trucks and SUVs into the nearest dealership to have the updates made to electrical and software systems. The intervention is essential and will not involve charges to the owner.
In addition to the GMC Sierra 1500, other vehicles affected by the power steering recall include the GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban, Silverado, Tahoe, and Cadillac Escalade, all from model year 2015.
