Top class action settlements 2022 overview: 

  • Who: Navient, Monsanto, T-Mobile, Hawaii, Capital One and Plains All American Pipeline were among those who made the 10 largest class action settlement agreements during 2022. 
  • Why: The class action settlements resolved a number of claims, including those revolving around water contamination and collusion, among other things. 
  • Where: Companies made the top class action settlements of 2022 nationwide.   

Businesses and entities agreed to a number of class action settlements this year, trying to resolve claims without continuing litigation and without admitting fault. 

The amount of funds in a class action settlement vary but can reach billions of dollars while potentially compensating millions of eligible class members. 

Top Class Actions compiled a list of the 10 largest class action settlement agreements from this past year, with the dollar amount ranging from as low as $190 million to as high as $1.85 billion. 

Navient agrees to pay $1.85B to end claims it used predatory student loan practices

Student loan service provider Navient made the largest class action settlement this year, agreeing in January to pay $1.85 billion to resolve claims from the state of Pennsylvania that it used predatory student loan practices

Eligible class members from a number of participating states will be able to receive either one or both forms of restitution and private loan cancellation as compensation, depending on their individual circumstances. 

Individuals impacted by Champlain Towers South collapse to receive combined $1.02B

Meanwhile, the Champlain Towers South Condominium Association agreed to pay the second-largest class action settlement of 2022, $1.02 billion to resolve claims surrounding the June 2021 collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida, that caused 98 fatalities. 

Champlain Towers made the class action settlement to compensate individuals who were affected by the collapse, including unit owners, those injured in the collapse either physically or emotionally and surviving family members of deceased victims. 

Michigan, City of Flint, others agree to pay $641.25M to resolve water crisis claims

The third largest class action settlement from 2022 came when Michigan and the City of Flint, among others, agreed to pay $641.25 million to resolve claims revolving around the Flint water crisis

Eligible class members include individuals who used or were exposed to lead-contaminated water originating from the Flint Water Treatment Plant from between April 25, 2014, and Nov. 16, 2020. 

Monsanto agrees to pay $550M to end claims it contaminated waterways with polychlorinated biphenyls

Monsanto, meanwhile, agreed in August to pay the fourth-largest settlement of 2022, $550 million to resolve claims it contaminated waterways in a number of U.S. cities and areas with polychlorinated biphenyls. 

Monsanto made the class action settlement to benefit cities, towns, villages, boroughs, townships and independent port districts that had their water body contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls since June 24, 2020. 

Bausch, Lupin, Oceanside agree to pay combined $453M to end claims they suppressed generic Glumetza

Coming in at No. 5, in April, a trio of pharmaceutical companies agreed to pay a combined $453 million to resolve claims they suppressed generic versions of the type-2 diabetes drug Glumetza to raise the drug’s price

Eligible class members include entities who purchased either generic or brand name Glumetza directly from the pharmaceutical companies Bausch, Lupin or Oceanside from between May 6, 2012, and Aug. 15, 2020. 

T-Mobile agrees to pay $350M to resolve claims revolving around 2021 data breach

T-Mobile, meanwhile, agreed in September to pay the sixth-largest class action settlement, $350 million to resolve claims the mobile telecommunication company failed to prevent a 2021 data breach that affected 76 million Americans. 

T-Mobile made the class action settlement to benefit individuals affected by the data breach, which T-Mobile disclosed back in August 2021. 

Hawaii agrees to pay $328M over claims it was wrong to shut down Hawaiin Claims Office

Coming in at No. 7, in July, Hawaii agreed to pay $328 million to put to bed claims the state was wrong to shut down the Hawaiian Claims Office, which was previously used to review alleged breaches of trust regarding the Hawaiian Home Lands Trust. 

Eligible class members include individuals who had filed claims with the Hawaiian Home Lands Trust Individual Claims Review Panel prior to Aug. 31, 1995. 

Mylan to pay $264M after being accused of working with Pfizer, others, to increase price of EpiPen

Mylan, meanwhile, agreed to pay the eighth-highest class action settlement, $264 million to resolve claims the pharmaceutical company worked with Pfizer and others to increase the price of an EpiPen. 

Mylan made the class action settlement to benefit individuals and entities who had either paid for or provided reimbursement for a brand name EpiPen or generic equivalent from between Aug. 24, 2011, and Nov. 1, 2020. 

Plains All American Pipeline agrees to pay $230M to end responsibility claims for 2015 oil spill

Plains All American Pipeline made the ninth-highest class action settlement for $230 million in July to resolve claims that, due to alleged negligence, it was responsible for a 2015 oil spill near Santa Barbara, California. 

Individuals eligible to be included in the class action settlement include those who, under certain circumstances, owned or worked on a fishing vessel affected by the oil spill or who owned or leased a residential beachfront property with a private easement to an affected beach. 

Capital One to pay $190 million to end claims it endangered customer information during 2019 data breach

Capital One, meanwhile, agreed earlier this year to pay $190 million to end claims it jeopardized the information of its customers during a 2019 data breach. 

The class action settlement, the tenth highest of the year, was made to benefit individuals who had their information compromised during the data breach.

      I was a victim of car buying scam, I walked into a dealer with a credit union loan at a low percent, suddenly I’m swept into a Dealer Finance loan without any understanding…now I’m stuck into a high percent loan as a 70 yr old!!!
      $7,100 in Warranty! I’m a woman who asked lots of questions as an analyst. Appears this common practice with Acura . So I pay double for this car!!!
      This is my second rip off from Dealership…Pearson Auto Made me turn in a recalled 2012 Sonata, keep me at dealership for 9hrs, coerced me to sign for new car…I did not choose, my blood sugar was soooo low. No offer of any food, when they were having a food party for Christmas. I have my story everywhere locally!
      Now this.

        I hope you know you should not stay “stuck” with a high interest loan… refinance through your credit union and see about buying an extra warranty through another dealer … look into then canceling the $7100 at the dealer … I believe in most extra coverages but the costs vary by car, dealer etc … good luck to you
