Whole Foods recall overview:

  • Who: F&S Fresh Foods recalled some carrots and celery sold at Whole Foods.
  • Why: The carrots may be contaminated with E. coli.
  • Where: The Whole Foods recall is active in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho and Nevada.

Carrots sold at Whole Foods stores across five states are being recalled as part of a larger recall of carrots that could be contaminated with E. Coli.

F&S Fresh Foods issued the carrot recall Nov. 21 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website.

The recall applies to Whole Foods Market 15 oz. Organic Carrot Sticks and Whole Foods Market 15 oz. Organic Carrots & Celery that should no longer be in stores but may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. The containers are plastic clamshells as pictured here, with “best if sold by” dates between Sept. 1 and Oct. 19, 2024.

“Consumers who purchased carrots with the above best if sold by dates and still have them in their refrigerator or freezer should not consume them; they should be destroyed or discarded so they cannot be consumed,” the Whole Foods recall says.

Carrot recall comes amid illness outbreak, FDA notice states

The recall was initiated after F&S Fresh Foods was notified by Grimmway Farms that whole organic carrots supplied to F&S Fresh Foods may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121:H19.

Last week, Grimmway Farms issued a major recall of carrots sold across the U.S. — including Puerto Rico — and Canada, as U.S. food safety watchdogs investigate a fatal outbreak of  E. coli infections. As of Nov. 17, the FDA said it had recorded 39 total illnesses, 15 hospitalizations and one death related to the outbreak.

E. coli O121:H19 is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system, the recall states.

The recalled Whole Foods carrots were sold at Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, and Nevada.

No illnesses had been reported to F&S Fresh Foods as of Nov. 21.
