Toyota data breach overview:ย

  • Who: Toyota has confirmed a data breach exposing the data of customers and employees.ย
  • Why: The breach was made public after a hacker group posted on a forum that it had stolen files from the automaker.ย
  • Where: The Toyota data breach happened in the United States.

Toyota has confirmed that sensitive customer and employee data was exposed following a data breach from a third-party vendor, with the stolen information appearing on an underground forum.ย

The breach was initially reported by BleepingComputer. According to the report, a hacker group identifying themselves as ZeroSevenGroup posted to an online forum on Aug. 16 claiming to have stolen 240GB of data from a U.S. branch of Toyota.ย

It said the data included employee details, financial records, customer contacts, and network credentials.ย

In the forum post, the group offered to share the stolen files, which reportedly contained vast amounts of confidential information, such as database records, photos, and emails.ย

The group also claimed to have used the ADRecon tool to gather data from Toyotaโ€™s Active Directory environment, Bleeping Computer reported.

Breach was โ€˜limited in scope,โ€™ automaker says

While Toyota acknowledged the situation, they assured BleepingComputer that the breach affected only a third-party entity and not their primary systems.ย

โ€œWe are aware of the situation. The issue is limited in scope and is not a system-wide issue,โ€ a Toyota spokesperson said.ย

However, they declined to disclose the name of the third-party vendor involved. Toyota added that they are in communication with those impacted and are prepared to offer assistance if needed.

The stolen files appear to have been created or taken around Dec. 25, 2022, indicating that hackers may have accessed a backup server. However, crucial details regarding when the breach was discovered and how many individuals were affected have not been shared. Toyota has stated that investigations are still ongoing.

Earlier this month, a group of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. and First Element Inc. alleging Toyota pollutes the environment with its hydrogen-fueled Mirai vehicle and holds a monopoly over the hydrogen fueling market.ย

Toyota sucks!! In July 2023, me and my son went to dealership in Van Nuys, CA to purchase a vehicle. Well, I gave my PII and they ran my credit. Toyota came back that with a denial due to my credit report. And that my score was low. I said no way, I had just checked it before going to the dealership. Well, needless to say, I checked my credit report and sure enough 3 collection were added after I checked it. These accounts were previously removed through the dispute process. I was furious. But get this, a couple of weeks later, I received denial letters (7) drop various car lenders that I did not know or EVEN applied too. So, I called the dealership tO check if they associate with these vendors. I was told they deal with many lenders. I came to the conclusion that Toyota ran my credit 7 xs making hard inquires on file PLUS, I did not give my permission t apply. I gave ONLY Toyota permission to run 1x NOT 7xs. Then the finally straw is more disturbing in the denial letters they put things that were not true. I never even heard of for a credit report. I was boiling mad so, I called The car dealer and asked how to correct it because they werenโ€™t authorize to give PII. The car dealer said he check it out and get back with me. HE DIDNT!! Also, I had to inform the credit bureau of these letters and contents which Iโ€™m still going through. It brought my score down. Iโ€™m passed cause I have to fight for things that were not my doings. Howโ€™s that for a bag of chips? Now a breach!!!

As someone that works in the lending industry, I assure you that the actions of that Toyota dealership sound like standard practice. When you walk into a dealership without your own loan, they will first try the franchise lender/ Toyota, if you get declined they will then try credit unions, banks such as Cap one, Chase then non prime auto lenders. Rest assured these inquires done on the same day for the same purpose/auto loan only have a minimal affect to your credit score. Do some research, all inquires within a 30 day period for the same purpose, ex: car loan, mortgage etc, only count as 1 inquiry/minimal point deduction. Those collections however, should be your focus. Having 3 collections added to your score in a short period could cause 100+ point decrease. Work on getting those paid and or removed. The denial letters you received are irrelevant as the bureau does not see or keep record of what a desk rep decided to check off as a denial reason.
