Nestlé recall overview:

  • Who: Nestlé is recalling around 440,500 metallic mugs from its Starbucks 2023 holiday gift sets.
  • Why: The mugs can overheat and break, causing a burn and laceration risk.
  • Where: The Nestlé mugs recall is effective across the United States.

Nestlé has issued a recall of more than 440,000 metallic Starbucks mugs from 2023 holiday gift sets due to an overheating and laceration risk.

Four different gift sets are part of the Starbucks mugs recall. The ceramic mugs have metallic coating and Starbucks branding, and come in 11-ounce and 16-ounce sizes.

The Nestlé mugs gift sets were called Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug.

The Starbucks mugs were sold online, in Target and Walmart stores, and through Nexcom (military retail outlets) nationwide between November 2023 and January 2024 for about $10, $13 or $20, the Nestlé recall says.

Nestlé mugs recall: 12 incidents of overheating, 10 injuries reported

Nestlé says it has received 12 reports of mugs overheating or breaking. Those incidents resulted in 10 injuries, including nine severe burns/blisters on fingers or hands and one cut to a finger, with a single incident requiring medical attention. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Consumers are asked to stop using the mugs immediately and return them to the place of purchase for cash or a gift card. Customers can receive a check refund through Nestle.

Nestlé can be reached online or at 800-681-1676 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
