Trump election indictment overview:

  • Who: Former President Donald Trump and 18 others have been indicted in Georgia on charges they conspired to interfere with the results of the 2020 presidential election.
  • Why: The indictment comes following an investigation into Trump after he requested Georgia’s secretary of state to “find” enough votes for him to win the electoral vote in the state during the 2020 presidential election.
  • Where: Georgia.

Former President Donald Trump and 18 others were indicted in Georgia on Monday on charges they broke the law by allegedly attempting to interfere with the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The charges follow a lengthy investigation stemming from Trump requesting Georgia’s secretary of state to “find” enough votes to allow him to win the state’s electoral vote, Law360 reports.

In addition to Trump, the indictment reportedly also included charges against his attorney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and attorney Sidney Powell.

Trump and his alleged co-conspirators have been charged with violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)

The accused — which includes an additional 30 unindicted co-conspirators, among others — are alleged to have impersonated a public officer, filed false documents, influenced witnesses and trespassed on computers, among other things.

“Trump and the other defendants charged in this indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump,” the Trump election indictment states.

Investigation into Trump’s alleged criminal acts in Georgia began in early 2021

The indictment argues Trump and his alleged co-conspirators conspired to commit “two or more acts of racketeering activity in Fulton County, Georgia,” as well as in other parts of Georgia and other states.

The investigation into Trump’s alleged criminal actions in Georgia began in early 2021 and was led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis, who said she plans to ask for a trial to start sometime in the next six months, Law360 reports.

Trump’s campaign issued a statement Monday night — prior to the indictment being published — calling Willis a “rabid partisan” and arguing her investigation intentionally aimed to interfere with the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

“Ripping a page from crooked Joe Biden’s playbook, Willis has strategically stalled her investigation to try and maximally interfere with the 2024 presidential race and damage the dominant Trump campaign,” the Trump campaign said, in a statement.

Earlier this month, Trump pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and obstruction stemming from his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
