The Federal Trade Commission returned millions of dollars to consumers through FTC refunds for nine settlements in June and July.

Zurixx FTC refunds

The FTC sent more than $12 million in refunds to consumers who paid for deceptive real estate investment coaching from Zurixx.

According to the FTC and the Utah Department of Commerce, Zurixx defrauded customers by promising to sell real estate investment training programs. The company allegedly forced consumers to pay large upfront fees but did not provide the promised coaching.

Zurixx agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC settlement. Using these funds, the FTC sent more than $12 million in refunds to 25,563 customers who paid Zurixx for real estate investment training and coaching programs.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days.

Fashion Nova FTC refunds

Shoppers may need to take further action in the Fashion Nova FTC settlement to receive refunds.

The FTC filed a lawsuit against Fashion Nova arguing the online retailer did not post negative reviews and excluded certain ratings to make its products look more attractive. This deceptive review and rating system allegedly tricked consumers into making purchases they otherwise would not have had they known the truth. 

Although the initial claim deadline was Aug. 15, 2023, the FTC recently contacted individuals with incomplete claims and will allow them to provide additional supporting documents until Aug. 25, 2024.

HomeAdvisor FTC refunds

In July, the FTC sent more than $3 million in FTC refunds to businesses who paid for HomeAdvisor memberships based on misleading promises.

According to the FTC, HomeAdvisor misled businesses by promising it could provide high-quality leads for potential customers. In addition, HomeAdvisor allegedly charged businesses for its optional mHelpDesk company service despite promising one free month with an annual membership.

The FTC recently returned more than $3 million to 110,372 businesses who paid for HomeAdvisor memberships. The agency is still reviewing and validating claims related to mHelpDesk subscriptions so additional payments may follow.

DreamCloud Mattress FTC refunds

The FTC sent more than $597,900 in refunds to DreamCloud mattress purchasers to resolve false advertising claims.

The FTC filed a lawsuit against Resident Home LLC in October 2021, arguing the company falsely advertised its DreamCloud mattresses as made from 100% United States-made materials. Consumers allegedly paid more for these mattresses based on these misleading statements.

In March 2023, the FTC sent an initial round of refunds totaling $44,570. Now, with remaining funds, the agency sent more than $597,900 in refunds to 6,991 customers who filed a claim before the deadline but did not already receive a payment.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days. Consumers who receive a PayPal payment should accept it within 30 days.

Student Debt Doctor FTC refunds

The FTC sent a second round of payments to consumers who lost money to Student Debt Doctor’s alleged debt relief scam.

According to the FTC, Student Debt Doctor tricked consumers into paying upfront fees as part of its student loan debt relief scam. The company allegedly told consumers their loans were in forbearance but failed to provide any meaningful relief, leaving borrowers owing more than they started with.

The FTC sent the first round of FTC refunds in June 2022 and returned more than $1.4 million to consumers. With remaining settlement funds, the FTC recently sent a second round of payments totaling more than $580,000. The agency sent additional refunds to 14,067 individuals who accepted their first FTC refund payment and who paid over $155 to Student Debt Doctor.

Teami FTC refunds

The FTC returned over $184,000 in a second round of refunds to consumers who purchased teas marketed by Teami.

The FTC claims that Teami falsely marketed various tea products with bogus health claims without any scientific evidence, promising consumers the teas could help them lose weight, fight cancer, clear clogged arteries and more. In addition, Teami allegedly partnered with social media influencers who did not disclose their sponsorships.

The first round of FTC refunds returned more than $670,000 to consumers in February 2022. Now, with the remaining refund money, the FTC is sending $184,000 to certain consumers as part of a second round of payments. Consumers will receive a second refund payment if they accepted their initial payments and paid more than $45 for Teami teas.

BetterHelp FTC refunds

The FTC sent refund payments from a $7.8 million settlement with BetterHelp resolving claims the online therapy company shared user data without consent.

According to the FTC, BetterHelp shared user information with Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest and Criteo despite promising users that their data would remain private. BetterHelp allegedly shared email addresses, IP addresses and answers to health questions.

BetterHelp agreed to a $7.8 million to resolve the FTC lawsuit and fund refunds to affected users. The FTC sent email notices to affected consumers and allowed them to select their payment method by June 10, 2024. The agency sent electronic payments in mid-June and planned to mail check payments in July.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days. Consumers who receive a PayPal payment should accept it within 30 days.

Lanier Law FTC refunds

The FTC sent refund payments to consumers who paid upfront fees for certain mortgage debt relief programs.

Lanier Law and several related companies allegedly promised to help homeowners with foreclosure issues, home loan modification and lowering monthly mortgage costs. Despite collecting upfront fees, Lanier Law failed to provide the help they promised, the FTC claims.

Lanier Law and other defendants agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC lawsuit. To receive a FTC refund, affected consumers had to file a valid claim form by March 18, 2024.

Lurn FTC refunds

The FTC returned more than $2.4 million to consumers who paid for Lurn business consulting programs based on false promises.

According to the FTC, Lurn made false promises while selling its business consulting programs to trick consumers into purchasing. The company allegedly promised its programs could help consumers easily make six figures.

The agency recently sent $2.4 million in FTC refunds to 1,922 consumers who paid for Lurn’s business consulting programs.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days. Consumers who receive a PayPal payment should accept it within 30 days.
