FTC refunds are in the mail for six settlements reached between the Federal Trade Commission and various companies accused of legal wrongdoing.

Opendoor FTC refunds

The FTC sent almost $62 million in refunds to homeowners who sold their home to Opendoor based on allegedly false promises.

According to the FTC, Opendoor promised homeowners they could receive market value for their homes while saving on costs by selling through the company. The FTC argues that, in reality, Opendoor offered far less and charged far more than they promised.

After reaching a settlement with Opendoor, the FTC returned nearly $62 million to 54,689 homeowners who sold their homes to Opendoor before Aug. 1, 2022. It also banned Opendoor from making false claims in the future about the costs and benefits of its services.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days.

WealthPress FTC refunds

The FTC returned more than $1.2 million to investors allegedly duped by WealthPress’ investment advice scheme.

The FTC claimed WealthPress, an investment advice company, and its owners made false claims that they could help consumers make a lot of money through investments. According to the agency, WealthPress had no backing for these claims and used the false promises to gain clients who ended up losing money through their services.

WealthPress agreed to pay more than $1.2 million as part of the FTC settlement. The FTC used these funds to return money to investment clients who paid WealthPress. The agency also barred WealthPress from making future false claims about its earnings without being able to support these claims with evidence.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days. Consumers who receive a PayPal payment should accept it within 30 days.

AT&T data throttling FTC refunds

The FTC sent almost $6.3 million in refunds to former AT&T customers whom the company  allegedly slowed data speeds as part of the cell phone company’s data throttling scheme.

According to the FTC, AT&T promised consumers “unlimited” data only to turn around and sharply reduce their data speeds after they reached a monthly usage threshold. This data throttling allegedly made it impossible to browse the web of stream videos.

AT&T returned $52 million to some affected consumers in 2020 as part of the FTC settlement, providing current customers with bill credits and former customers with mailed checks. With the remaining settlement funds, the FTC returned nearly $6.3 million to 267,734 former customers who didn’t receive a payment from AT&T and filed a claim by May 18, 2023.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days. Consumers who receive a PayPal payment should accept it within 30 days.

RagingBull.com FTC refunds

The FTC distributed a second round of refunds to consumers who lost money due to Raging Bull’s alleged deceptive investment subscription.

The FTC claims Raging Bull tricked consumers into paying a subscription plan for investment strategies and recommendations by claiming this advice could help generate consistent returns. The resulting subscriptions were allegedly hard to cancel, causing unwanted renewal charges, and the advice reportedly caused consumers to lose large amounts of money instead of making a profit.

The FTC sent more than $1.7 million in refunds to affected consumers in March 2023 with funds from a settlement. In April, with remaining funds from the settlement, the FTC returned an additional $627,000 to 6,999 consumers who accepted their initial refund payments.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days. Consumers who receive a PayPal payment should accept it within 30 days.

Ring FTC refunds

The FTC returned more than $5.6 million to Ring customers who had an account with the home security camera company.

According to the FTC, Ring failed to protect consumer accounts from malicious access by employees and hackers. Employees allegedly had too much access to customer videos, while hackers were reportedly able to take control of these vulnerable accounts to view customer account information, cameras and videos.

The FTC sent more than $5.6 million in refunds to 117,044 consumers who had accounts with Ring. The FTC settlement also required Ring to delete videos it shouldn’t have access to and establish stronger protections for consumer accounts.

Consumers who receive a PayPal payment should accept it within 30 days.

Career Education Corporation FTC refunds

The FTC sent a third round of refunds to consumers as part of a Career Education Corporation (CEC) settlement.

Career Education Corporation allegedly operated American InterContinental University, Colorado Technical University and Sanford-Brown and used deceptively gathered contact information to make high-pressure sales calls for its schools. According to the FTC, CEC purchased consumer information from companies that stole contact info through deceptive websites that claimed to help consumers find jobs, enlist in the military and get government benefits.

The FTC sent an initial round of refunds in June 2021 and additional payments in November 2022, returning more than $29 million to affected consumers. With remaining settlement funds, the FTC sent a third round of payments totaling more than $720,000 to 4,296 individuals who paid more than $1,000 to CEC and who cashed their first check from the FTC settlement.

Individuals who receive a refund check should cash it within 90 days.
