Kimberly-Clark has issued a voluntary recall of their menstruation care product known as U by Kotex Sleek Tampons regular absorbency.
According to a Dec. 12, 2018 article on the USA Today website, the recall was initiated in the U.S. and Canada due to complaints of poor quality with potentially dangerous consequences. According to the manufacturer, U by Kotex Sleek Tampons regular absorbency were coming apart during removal in some cases.
The article indicated that some women had such difficulty retrieving the unraveled pieces of U by Kotex Sleek Tampons regular absorbency that they had to seek medical attention.
Serious life-threatening infections can develop when a tampon remains in the body too long and gather a bacterial load, according to Healthline. The infection is known as Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS is a type of staph infection that enters the bloodstream and releases toxic byproducts.
Although more commonly associated with super absorbency varieties of tampons due to the length of time they can be left in vagina without the need to change, pieces of U by Kotex Sleek Tampons regular absorbency left behind could potentially lead to TSS. An additional contributing factor to TSS is any vaginal tissue abrasion, irritation, or cut.
In the 1980s, according to Today, TSS was responsible for the death of several women and was the catalyst for U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation of menstruation products.
After these series of deaths, manufacturers ceased to market tampons in such a manner as to lead women to think they could be left in more than eight hours. Healthline reveals that the following symptoms may be indicators of TSS:
- Unexplained Fever
- Confusion or Brain Fog
- Headache
- Seizures
- Gastrointestinal upset including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- An unusual drop in blood pressure
- Skin rash and/or redness of eyes, mouth, and throat
While there have been no specifics identifying TSS with U by Kotex Sleek Tampons regular absorbency, Kimberly-Clark has admitted that cases of infection, as well as vaginal injury and irritation have been reported.
According to USA Today, the affected tampons of this line were manufactured between Oct. 7, 2016 and Oct. 16, 2018 and commercially distributed from Oct.17, 2016 through Oct. 23, 2018.
Information regarding whether or not a currently owned box of U by Kotex Sleek Tampons regular absorbency can be ascertained by visiting Kimberly-Clark’s recall website and typing in the lot number. The Kimberly-Clark recall doesn’t include other absorbency levels of U by Kotex product line.
