A woman shops in a drugstore.Kimberly-Clark has voluntarily initiated a U by Kotex Sleek Tampons recall after multiple consumer reports of quality defects, including claims that the tampons shred and fall apart inside women’s bodies.

Kimberly-Clark, the parent company of Kotex, issued the voluntary recall in December 2018. According to an announcement released by the FDA, the U by Kotex Sleek Tampons recall affects regular absorbency Sleek U by Kotex tampons manufactured between Oct. 7, 2016, and Oct. 16, 2018.

The affected tampons were distributed between Oct. 17, 2016, and Oct. 23, 2018, and may be identified by the specific lot numbers printed on the bottoms of the packages. They were sold in packages of 18, 34, and 3, and were also included in variety packs of multiple types of tampons. Consumers who may have these tampons in their homes are recommended not to use them.

Can Tampons Harm You?

Tampons are estimated to be used by 70 percent of menstruating women in the United States. Although these women trust their feminine hygiene products to be safe, the recent Kotex recall is casting doubt on the safety of these products.

As tampons and pads are regulated and approved by the Food and Drug Administration as medical devices, tampon manufacturers are not required to disclose the materials used in the products to consumers. Although they are generally made from a blend of cotton and rayon, countless other undisclosed materials could be inside of tampons.

According to Kotex’s FAQ regarding the recall, consumers have reported several issues with their tampons. These issues include the tampons unraveling or coming apart during their removal. This product degradation has allegedly been so serious that it required some women to seek medical attention in order to remove small pieces of the tampons from their bodies.

Additionally, there have been reports of localized vaginal injury, vaginal irritation, and infections associated with the use of the Kotex tampons. These problems may lead to additional issues for the affected women, including pain, bleeding, discomfort, itching, swelling, bladder infections, yeast infections, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.

What Can Affected Consumers Do?

According to Kimberly-Clark, consumers should not return the recalled product to the store. Instead, they can contact Kotex directly for reimbursement. If you have used the products named in the U by Kotex Sleek Tampons recall and experienced issues including unraveling, shredding, or more, you can report those problems to the Food and Drug Administration through their MedWatch site.
