The Boy Scouts of America have reached an $850 million settlement with survivors of sexual abuse.

Among the largest sexual abuse settlements in US history, the deal — known as a restructuring support agreement — was filed in court by BSA attorneys on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

The agreement includes the BSA, local BSA councils, victims, and lawyers appointed to represent victims who may file claims in the future.

“After months of intensive negotiations, the debtors have reached resolution with every single official and major creditor constituency,” BSA attorneys wrote in the agreement, according to the AP.

Per the agreement, the BSA will pay out as much as $250 million to a trust fund that will compensate survivors, and local councils will pay out the other $600 million, CNN reported.

“This significant step toward a global resolution benefits the entire Scouting community, as this agreement will help local councils make their contributions to the Trust without additional drain on their assets, and will allow them to move forward with the national organization toward emergence from bankruptcy,” BSA said in a news release, according to CNN.

The BSA filed for bankruptcy protection in February 2020 while hundreds of lawsuits were being filed against the organization over sexual abuse allegations dating back decades.

Ken Rothweiler, whose Philadelphia law firm represented more than 16,000 abuse survivors, told the cable news outlet that he is “pleased that both the BSA and their local councils have stepped up to be the first to compensate the survivors.”

Additional negotiations with sponsoring and chartering organizations are expected.
