The FBI said it is investigating a data breach involving sensitive and personal information of U.S. House of Representatives members and staff from the servers of health insurance marketplace DC Health Link.
DC Health Link administers the health care plans for members of the House of Representatives, along with their families and staff, reports Bleeping Computer.
Those impacted by the data breach were reportedly notified about the incident today in an email sent to them by U.S. House Chief Administrative Officer Catherine L. Szpindor, reports Daily Caller.
Szpindor said the data breach may have exposed the personally identifiable information of thousands of enrollees in DC Health link health insurance plans, and that any member or eligible employee may have been impacted.
“Currently, I do not know the size and scope of the breach, but have been informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that account information and Pit of hundreds of Member and House staff were stolen,” Szpindor said.
Szpindor noted it did not appear Members of the House of Representatives were specifically targeted by the attack leading to the data breach, while also not providing any details about the specific data affected.
DC Health Link data breach may have exposed personal info of around 170,000 individuals
Information possibly exposed in the attack was potentially discovered by Bleeping Computer, however, with the website discovering a threat actor known as IntelBroker is selling information stolen during the data breach on a hacking forum.
A sample of the stolen data allegedly shows the exposed information affects around 170,000 individuals and includes names, birthdates, addresses, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers, among other things, reports Bleeping Computer.
The stolen data was reportedly posted for sale on March 6, while Adam Hudson, the public information officer for Health Benefit Exchange Authority confirmed to Bleeping Computer on March 8 that some of the stolen information had been exposed online.
In other news concerning national security, a pair of New York men were arrested in December 2022 and charged with working with Russian hackers to break into the taxi dispatch system at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
