Ticketmaster data breach class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Chastine Dickey-Johnson and Serena Chapman filed a class action lawsuit against Ticketmaster LLC and Live Nation Entertainment Inc.
  • Why: Dickey-Johnson and Chapman claim Ticketmaster and Live Nation failed to properly safeguard and secure the personally identifiable information of their customers during a May data breach.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania federal court.

Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation failed to properly safeguard and secure the personally identifiable information (PII) of around 560 million of their customers during a data breach last month, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Chastine Dickey-Johnson and Serena Chapman claim consumers entrusted Live Nation and Ticketmaster with their personal information with the mutual understanding the companies would protect it.

“The data breach was a direct result of defendants’ failure to implement adequate and reasonable data protection procedures, including vendor management, necessary to protect consumers’ PII from a foreseeable and preventable risk of unauthorized disclosure,” the Ticketmaster class action says.

Dickey-Johnson and Chapman want to represent a nationwide class and North Carolina and Texas subclasses of consumers whose PII was accessed or acquired by an unauthorized party as a result of the Ticketmaster data breach on or about May 20, 2024.

Ticketmaster data breach puts consumers at risk going forward, class action claims

Dickey-Johnson and Chapman argue the data breach exposed PII, including full names, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers and credit card details, information they argue puts them at risk going forward.

“The plaintiffs and class members are at an increased risk of future harm, including identity theft, fraud, spam, phishing or other impersonation attacks,” the Ticketmaster class action says.

Dickey-Johnson and Chapman claim Ticketmaster and Live Nation are guilty of negligence and negligence per se, breach of implied contract and unjust enrichment.

The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual, nominal, statutory, consequential and punitive damages for themselves and all class members.

Hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the data breach after reportedly trying to extort Ticketmaster and Live Nation. The group, which published a 1.3 terabyte database of the data on the newly reopened BreachForums website, is asking for $500,000 in exchange for the stolen data.
