Online marketplace Temu reportedly denied it suffered a data breach after a threat actor claimed to have accessed a database containing 87 million customer records.
The threat actor put the alleged stolen data up for sale earlier this week on the hacking site BreachForums, Bleeping Computer reports.
However, Breach Forums reportedly banned the threat actor from the forum for misrepresenting and attempting to sell data that was already publicly available.
Temu reportedly told Bleeping Computer it cross-checked a small sample of data the threat actor posted and did not find any matches for data from its own database.
The sample data included usernames and IDs, full names, IP addresses, birthdates, genders, shipping addresses, phone numbers and hashed passwords, Bleeping Computer reports.
Temu says it plans to pursue legal action against those spreading ‘false information’
The threat actor behind the alleged data breach reportedly maintains the incident is legitimate, that it still has access to Temu’s email and internal panels and that the company’s code has vulnerabilities.
However, Temu reportedly maintains steadfast in its denial that the published data belongs to the company and says it plans to take legal action against misinformation spreaders.
“We take any attempt to tarnish our reputation or harm our users extremely seriously and reserve the right to pursue legal action against those responsible for spreading false information and attempting to profit from such malicious activities,” Temu told Bleeping Computer.
In other news, fashion retailer Shein filed a complaint against Temu in August over claims the company controls its sellers and asks them to infringe on Shein’s intellectual property, such as its copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets.
