Payment processor’s data breach affects 1.7M consumers

Payment processing company Slim CD disclosed it suffered a data breach that it said exposed the personal information of nearly 1.7 million consumers. 

Slim CD, in a filing with Maine’s attorney general, said the data breach occurred Aug. 17, 2023, and was discovered June 15, 2024. 

The company, which processes electronic payments such as credit cards, said an investigation revealed there had been unauthorized system access between August 17, 2023, and June 15, 2024.

Slim CD said it is concerned the unauthorized access may have allowed an unauthorized actor to “view or obtain” certain credit card information between June 14 and June 15, 2024. 

“The information that could have been subject to unauthorized access includes name, address, credit card number, and card expiration date,” the company said. 

Slim CD says it ‘moved quickly’ to investigate, respond to data breach

Slim CD said it “moved quickly” to investigate and respond to the data breach, notified federal law enforcement and has implemented additional security measures to “mitigate risk” and help prevent “future similar incidents.” 

“Slim CD continues to review and enhance its existing policies and procedures relating to data protection and security,” the company said. 

The company is not offering any complaint identity theft protection services to those affected by the data breach, but rather offered guidance on how to “better protect against identity theft and fraud.” 

“​​We encourage you to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing your account statements and monitoring your free credit reports for suspicious activity and to detect errors,” Slim CD said, per a sample data breach notification letter.
