MoneyGram data breach class action overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Mosima Namata is suing MoneyGram.
  • Why: Namata claims the company’s negligence led to a data breach that exposed his private information.
  • Where: The MoneyGram data breach class action lawsuit was filed in a Texas federal court.

A California consumer claims in a new class action lawsuit that his private information was exposed in a data breach due to MoneyGram’s negligence.

Plaintiff Mosima Namata filed the class action complaint against MoneyGram Payment Systems Inc. on Oct. 11 in a Texas federal court.

Namata alleges in the MoneyGram class action lawsuit that the company was negligent in its safeguarding of customers’ sensitive personal and financial information. The plaintiff argues that MoneyGram’s failure to secure data led to a significant breach, affecting potentially hundreds of thousands of people.

Namata says cybercriminals accessed MoneyGram’s network between Sept. 20 and Sept. 22, 2024, compromising personally identifiable information such as Social Security numbers, government-issued IDs, and bank account details.

MoneyGram — a global leader in payment services — allegedly stored this information without adequate security measures, leaving it vulnerable to unauthorized access.

MoneyGram ignored industry-standard protocols, lawsuit claims

Namata says he only received notification of the breach on Oct. 7, 2024, informing him that his data had been exposed. He alleges the incident resulted in a loss of privacy, increased anxiety, and a heightened risk of identity theft.

The MoneyGram class action also alleges that MoneyGram ignored industry-standard protocols for data encryption and other protective measures.

As a result, Namata is looking to represent anyone in the United States who was also impacted by the data breach. He’s suing for negligence, breach of implied contract and unjust enrichment and is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Comcast recently confirmed it was affected by a February 2024 data breach involving its past third-party partner, Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS).

One thought on MoneyGram class action claims data breach stole customer data

  1. Senada Wrublr says:

On September 20, 2024, I sent money $1,182.05 using MoneyGram. Money was sent to Bosnia for the service done, my dad’s tombstone. The receiver couldn’t get the money due to the MoneyGram breach. This has caused me extreme trouble. After three days I had to borrow money to send it again but used Western Union. MoneyGram was very unprofessional, no information about if or when they’ll be back in business or would I ever receive my money back. I’ve tweeted them, messaged on Facebook, tried calling, everything was shut down. Their automated message was all I could get, “we are working on it”,
