Dell data breach overview:

  • Who: Dell Technologies warned customers it suffered a data breach exposing customer names, physical addresses and Dell hardware and order information.
  • Why: Dell attributed the incident to the breach of a company portal containing customer purchase information.
  • Where: The Dell data breach affects certain Dell customers nationwide.

Dell Technologies issued a warning to customers about a data breach it said exposed customer names, physical addresses and Dell hardware and order information.

The technology company sent data breach notifications in the wake of a threat actor’s claims to have stolen information belonging to approximately 49 million Dell customers, reports Bleeping Computer

In a Dell data breach notification shared with Bleeping Computer and reviewed by Top Class Actions, the company attributed the incident to a breach of a company portal containing customer information regarding purchases.

No financial or payment information, email addresses, telephone numbers or “highly sensitive customer information” was exposed in the data breach, according to Dell, which said it does not believe the data breach poses a “significant risk” to customers.

“Our investigation indicates your information was accessed during this incident, but we do not believe there is significant risk given the limited information impacted,” the company wrote in its data breach notification.

Dell data breach notification comes nearly 2 weeks after attempt to sell stolen data

The data breach notification was sent nearly two weeks after a threat actor tried to sell a Dell database in a now-deleted post on the hacking forum Breach Forums on April 28, reports Bleeping Computer.

The threat actor, who went by the name Menelik, reportedly claimed to have stolen information from Dell pertaining to “49 million customer and other information systems purchased from Dell between 2017-2024.”

Dell told customers it is continuing to monitor the situation. The company also said it notified law enforcement and is working with a third-party forensics firm to investigate the incident.

In other news involving Dell, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against the computer maker in April 2023 over claims it concealed a hinge defect in its Inspiron 2-in-1 hybrid laptops.

The Dell class action lawsuit argued the alleged hinge defect prevented the laptops from opening and closing, depriving consumers from being able to configure the devices as either a tablet or laptop.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron laptop for my college bound granddaughter on July 2023. I just purchased charger in Sept 2024. I have also added my comments about the Inspiron hinges/screen defect. Broke one month after warranty only by opening and closing laptop. I threw away $600 and very upset and disappointed as in a senior citizen on a fixed income and she has to have a laptop for her studies. No more Dell’s for me.

I purchased a computer from Dell so they would’ve had my information.
