LabCorp, a medical testing giant, has announced this month that it was involved in a major data breach through a third party, affecting around 7.7 million LabCorp patients.

Basics of the LabCorp Data Breach

According to LabCorp’s announcement, the company learned that the data breach affecting millions of its consumers had occurred through a third party, American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA), between August 1, 2018, and March 30, 2019, over a period of about eight months total.

AMCA is a New York-based company that collects debt for a large number of businesses in a variety of industries, including medical labs and hospitals, telecom companies, direct marketers, and state and local traffic or toll agencies.

A good deal of private information may have been revealed through the LabCorp data breach, the company said, including first and last name, date of birth, phone, address, date of service, provider, and even balance information.

LabCorp’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission laid out further specifics. “AMCA’s affected system also included credit card or bank account information that was provided to the consumer to AMCA (for those who sought to pay their balance),” reads LabCorp’s filing. “LabCorp provided no ordered test, laboratory results, or diagnostic information to AMCA. AMCA has advised LabCorp that Social Security Numbers and insurance identification information are not stored or maintained for LabCorp consumers.”

How Many Consumers Are Affected?

Of the 7.7 million consumers affected in the LabCorp data breach, around 200,000 may have had their credit card or bank account information accessed. Now, AMCA is sending notices to these consumers to inform them of the issue, though LabCorp has not been given a list of their affected consumers, nor more specific information about the breach itself and what information may have been exposed.

The LabCorp data breach is part of the larger data breach of the AMCA. In this breach, Quest Diagnostics and the personal information of nearly 12 million Quest patients was also compromised. Given how many companies AMCA services, it is possible that many more incidents of major data breaches are yet to be uncovered from other companies. Quest reports first being notified by AMCA of the data breach on May 14, 2019, but did not know for a couple of weeks how many of their consumers were affected, and what information may have been compromised.

AMCA has noted that the security breach is being investigated by third-party security experts, reports The Wall Street Journal.
