Software company Citrix has agreed to pay $2.275 million to settle claims related to a data breach that occurred in 2018 and 2019.
The settlement Class is made up of individuals who were notified by Citrix that their personal information may have been compromised in the data breach around March 2019, or those who received a notice of this settlement stating they or their dependents are part of the Class.
The settlement fund will be used to reimburse members for out-of-pocket losses that can be traced back to the Citrix data breach and time spent dealing with issues related to the data breach, for Experian identity restoration and minor monitoring services, for enrollment in three-bureau credit monitoring services through Experian, and for cash payments as an alternative to the monitoring services.
Citrix also has agreed to implement certain business practices related to information security for three years after the settlement’s effective date.
These commitments include an enhanced cybersecurity training and awareness program, enhanced policies related to data security, enhanced security measures, further restriction of access to personal information, and enhanced monitoring and response capabilities.
According to the complaint filed in the class action lawsuit against Citrix, the company revealed in March 2019 the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had advised Citrix it believed “international cyber criminals” had accessed the company’s network using a tactic called “password spraying,” which involves exploiting weak passwords.
The plaintiffs claim Citrix notified them and the Class in an April 29, 2019, letter that hackers had not only accessed the network between Oct. 13, 2018, and March 8, 2019, but that files containing current and former employees had been removed. In some cases, the letter allegedly said, dependent and beneficiary information also was compromised.
According to the plaintiffs, the lack of specific information about what information was taken prevented those affected from being able to take “meaningful, proactive, and targeted mitigation measures that could help protect them from years of financial harm.”
Eligible Class Members may receive up to $15,000 reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses traced to the Citrix data breach.
Class Members may be eligible to claim $25 per hour for up to five hours of time spent dealing with issues related to the breach.
Under the agreement, Citrix will not know the identities of the Class members who file claims for any benefits provided by the settlement.
A final approval hearing in the Citrix data breach settlement is set for June 10, 2021.
The deadline to object or opt out of the settlement is March 28, 2021.
Claim forms must be submitted by May 17, 2021.
