Brazil’s Polícia Federal announced the arrest of notorious hacker USDoD on Oct. 16 following what the agency referred to as Operation Data Breach.
The agency says it conducted a search and seizure warrant and a preventative arrest warrant against the National Public Data hacker in the city of Belo Horizonte in Brazil’s second-most populous state, Minas Gerais.
The hacker arrest came after USDoD boasted of being responsible for several cyber invasions in different countries, according to the Polícia Federal, which noted the threat actor would have to answer for the crime of invasion of a computer device.
“In the virtual environment, the hacker is known to be a malicious actor responsible for the leakage of large databases of personal information,” the agency says in the announcement.
National Public Data hacker leaked 2.7 billion public records on hacking forum
USDoD leaked nearly 2.7 billion public records stolen from National Public Data on the Breached hacking forum earlier this year.
The leaked public records included personal information belonging to citizens of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada and included names, Social Security numbers, physical addresses and other possible information.
National Public Data is a company that collects and sells personal information used to help with conducting background checks, obtaining criminal records and executing private investigations.
USDoD ultimately claimed responsibility for the National Public Data data breach in April when they attempted to sell the data for $3.5 million.
A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against National Public Data in September over claims the company failed to take adequate measures to protect consumers’ personal data, leaving it vulnerable to being exposed in a cyberattack.
