Security company ADT confirmed it suffered a data breach as a result of an unauthorized actor gaining access to its systems using credentials taken from a third-party partner.
The ADT data breach, which the company reported to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Oct. 7, is the second reported by the company in the past two months. ADT also informed the SEC in August that it suffered a data breach at the end of July.
ADT told the SEC after this latest data breach it has taken steps to put an end to the unauthorized access and has launched an investigation into the incident.
The data breach exposed certain encrypted data connected with ADT employee accounts, according to ADT, which said it does not believe customer information or its security systems were affected.
“Based on its investigation to date, the Company does not believe customers’ personal information has been exfiltrated, or that customers’ security systems have been compromised,” ADT said in its October filing with the SEC.
ADT data breach response assisted by federal officials, outside cybersecurity experts
The company told the SEC it has implemented countermeasures in the wake of the data breach and that it is working with federal law enforcement and outside cybersecurity experts to aid with its response.
“ADT has hired leading third-party cybersecurity experts to assist with the Company’s response to the incident, and is working closely with federal law enforcement,” ADT said in the SEC filing. “The Company is also cooperating closely with its third-party business partner to address the incident.”
ADT confirmed the earlier data breach after a hacker going by the name “netnsher” published the allegedly stolen customer data — including email addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses — on a hacking forum at the end of July.
