ADT data breach overview:ย

  • Who: Security company ADT confirmed with the SEC earlier this month that it suffered a data breach affecting a โ€œsmall percentageโ€ of its customers.ย
  • Why: ADT confirmed the incident after a threat actor leaked the allegedly stolen data of 30,800 ADT customers at the end of July.ย
  • Where: The data breach affects certain ADT customers nationwide.ย

Security company ADT confirmed earlier this month that it suffered a data breach that affected the data of its customers.ย

ADT confirmed the breach after threat actors leaked the allegedly stolen customer information on a hacking forum at the end of July, reports Bleeping Computer.ย

The disclosure was made via a Form 8-K regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). ADT, in the disclosure, said some of its databases were breached by threat actors who stole customer information.ย

โ€œADT Inc. recently experienced a cybersecurity incident during which unauthorized actors illegally accessed certain databases containing ADT customer order information,โ€ the company said in the filing.

ADT said an investigation into the data breach revealed stolen data included information such as customer email addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses.ย

ADT: โ€˜no reasonโ€™ to believe customer banking info exposed in breach

ADT said it has โ€œno reason to believeโ€ the threat actors obtained other personally sensitive information, such as credit card data or banking information, or that its customersโ€™ home security systems were compromised.ย

The company said it is continuing its investigation into the data breach and that it notified customers who it believes were affected, noting the amount affected comprises only a โ€œsmall percentageโ€ of its overall subscriber base.ย

A threat actor going by the name โ€œnetnsherโ€ leaked the allegedly stolen ADT customer data on a hacking forum on July 31, according to Bleeping Computer. The leak reportedly involved 30,800 customer records, including emails, addresses, user IDs and purchase information.ย

In other data breach news, a pair of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against AT&T at the end of July over claims their data was stolen in a data breach announced by the telecom giant last month.ย

The consumers, while not AT&T customers themselves, argue their information was exposed in the data breach since their companies utilized AT&Tโ€™s networks, and that they are subsequently now vulnerable to the actions of โ€œmalevolent actors.โ€ย
