Lansing Community College agreed to a $1.45 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2022 data breach that compromised sensitive student and employee information.

The Lansing Community College settlement benefits individuals whose personal information was compromised in the Lansing Community College data breach between Dec. 25, 2022, and March 15, 2023.

According to the Lansing Community College data breach class action lawsuit, the college failed to prevent a data breach that occurred from December 2022-March 2023 and compromised sensitive personal information, such as Social Security numbers. Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit say Lansing Community College could have prevented the breach through reasonable cybersecurity measures.

Lansing Community College is a community college in Lansing, Michigan.

Lansing Community College hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.45 million settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the Lansing Community College settlement, class members can receive a monetary benefit of either documented loss payments or alternative cash payments.

Documented loss payments are available to class members who experienced losses as a result of the Lansing Community College data breach. These payments may reimburse class members up to $2,000 in documented losses, including bank fees, communication charges, credit expenses, fraudulent charges and more.

Alternative cash payments are available to class members who did not experience losses as a result of the data breach or who do not have documentation to support their losses. These payments will vary depending on the number of participating class members and the amount remaining in the settlement fund after the settlement administrator distributes documented loss payments 

Lansing Community College also agreed to change its cybersecurity measures to better protect student and employee information. These improvements include enhancing multifactor authentication, updating software, resetting compromised passwords, implementing new endpoint detection and response software and more.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Dec. 20, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the Lansing Community College data breach class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Jan. 21, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 20, 2025.
