UnitedLex agreed to pay $1.3 million to resolve claims it failed to adequately protect the personal information of its employees and contractors from a March 2023 data breach.

The UnitedLex settlement benefits current and former employees and contractors of UnitedLex, as well as their beneficiaries and dependents, whose personal information may have been impacted in the data breach occurring in or around March 2023. These individuals should have received a data breach notification informing them their information was potentially compromised.

According to the data breach class action lawsuit, cybercriminals gained unauthorized access to UnitedLex’s servers and potentially compromised the personal information of current and former employees, contractors and their beneficiaries. The data breach allegedly compromised names, Social Security numbers and financial information used for payroll and benefits.

UnitedLex is a legal data analytics and management solution provider.

UnitedLex hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.3 million settlement to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the UnitedLex settlement, class members can receive several benefits, including reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach, additional cash payments and free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.

The settlement offers up to $15,000 in reimbursement for expenses, such as bank fees, travel expenses, professional fees, credit costs and damages, from identity theft or fraud. Class members can also receive up to $500 in reimbursement for lost time spent addressing issues related to the data breach. If funds remain after reimbursing for expenses and lost time, claimants could receive additional pro rata cash payments.

Free credit monitoring and identity restoration services will be offered to all settlement class members who elect to enroll through July 11, 2027.

In addition to providing monetary settlement benefits, UnitedLex agreed to implement and maintain certain business practice commitments relating to its information security program.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Sept. 23, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2024.

To receive ULX data breach settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Nov. 12, 2024.
