$8M Viki privacy class action settlement

Viki has agreed to an $8 million class action settlement to resolve claims it violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by sharing user data with Facebook.

The Viki settlement benefits individuals who requested or obtained video content on Viki.com between Jan. 12, 2016, and July 30, 2024, while using a Facebook account and a Viki account.

Viki is a video streaming service that allows users to watch international television shows and movies. The service is free but requires users to create an account to access content.

According to a class action lawsuit, Viki violated the VPPA by sharing user data with Facebook through the Meta Pixel web tracking tool. Plaintiffs in the case say this tool allowed Viki to share user identities and video-viewing preferences with Facebook without obtaining the necessary consent.

The VPPA prohibits video service providers from sharing information that could identify a consumer and their video-watching history. Under the law, companies must obtain consent before sharing this information.

Viki has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay this $8 million settlement to resolve the VPPA class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive a cash payment. Exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of participating class members and the net settlement fund after deductions.

According to the settlement website, class members could be eligible for payments between $30 and $150. However, these estimates could be higher or lower depending on the number of claims filed.

In addition to providing cash payments, Viki agreed to stop using the Meta Pixel web tracking tool on any page that includes video content unless it obtains the necessary consent or the VPPA is amended.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Sept. 22, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Viki settlement is scheduled for Oct. 21, 2025.

To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 22, 2025.

Who’s Eligible

The settlement benefits anyone who requested or obtained video content on the Viki website while in the United States and at a time when they had a Facebook account and a Viki account between Jan. 12, 2016, and July 30, 2024.

Potential Award

Between $30 and $150, depending on the number of valid claims received.
