Zithromax Z-Pak Linked to Heart Death
By Anne Bucher
Zithromax (azithromycin) is a popular antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory infections, sexually transmitted diseases, skin infections and ear infections. Because it can be taken over a shorter period of time than most antibiotics, the Zithromax Z-Pak is especially popular with parents whose children are reluctant to take medications. Depending on the prescribed dosage, Zithromax is typically taken once a day for up to five days.
FDA Warns of Increased Risk of Zithromax Heart Death
Despite the antibiotic’s popularity, the Zithromax Z-Pak has been linked to serious cardiovascular side effects. In 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that azithromycin was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular death when compared to other antibiotics. The FDA issued this warning after the New England Journal of Medicine published a study of patients who took azithromycin, amoxicillin and no drug at all. The findings indicated that patients who took a five-day course of azithromycin experienced a risk of heart death that was three times higher than patients who took no drugs at all. Patients who took azithromycin had twice the risk of heart death as patients who took amoxicillin.
Because all drugs are associated with some degree of risk, it is important to note that the risk of Zithromax heart death is small. However, people with pre-existing heart conditions face a heightened risk of Zithromax heart death. In March, the FDA updated its warning to indicate that Zithromax could alter the electrical activity of the heart, causing some patients to experience a potentially fatal heart rhythm. The agency noted that health care professionals should consider the heart health of their patients before prescribing the Zithromax Z-Pak, especially if the patients are already at risk for cardiovascular events.
Number of Zithromax Z-Pak Lawsuits on the Rise
Since Zithromax was approved by the FDA in 1991, Pfizer embarked on a massive direct-to-consumer campaign. Many patients were attracted to the more convenient dosage. While most antibiotics must be taken at least twice a day for up to 10 days, the Zithromax Z-Pak requires a patient to take one pill a day for only five days. Zithromax is often offered in a single-dose packet to treat some mild bacterial infections.
As Zithromax quickly skyrocketed in popularity, many patients began asking their doctors to prescribe the Zithromax Z-Pak. Before the 2012 study, neither doctors nor patients had any reason to be concerned about Zithromax side effects like heart attack.
Many people are filing Zithromax lawsuits, alleging that Pfizer failed to adequately warn about the serious side effects of Zithromax Z-Pak. They believe that the drug manufacturer prioritized profits over safety and put countless patients’ health at risk. In some cases, families have filed wrongful death lawsuits after their loved one has suffered Zithromax heart death. They seek to hold Pfizer accountable for the safety of their medications. They are also seeking compensation for the losses they have suffered due to side effects from the Zithromax Z-Pak.
