Z-Pak Is Popular Antibiotic During Flu Season, Despite Side Effects

By Andrea Gressman

Z-Pak treatments, side effectsThe antibiotic Z-Pak (also known as Zithromax or azithromycin) is a very popular option frequently used to treat various types of bacterial infections. It is classified as a macrolide-type antibiotic and is able to work by stopping the growth of bacteria. However, despite what many may think, Z-Pak is not effective in treating viral infections. Viral infections are classified as things like the common cold.

Zithromax is often prescribed to treat the following:

  • Bronchitis
  • Earaches
  • Pneumonia
  • Sore throats

In 2012 it was reported that physicians wrote 55.3 million Zithromax, Z-Pak, or azithromycin prescriptions across the nation. As an estimate provided by IMS Health this would put the sales for this antibiotic at $464.6 million.

There has been a common problem among many medications throughout history and that is if it is misused or used when not necessary the effectiveness of that medication can be greatly decreased. That is certainly true with Zithromax. However, Zithromax has a number of other major concerns that don’t always get a lot of attention and those are the severe side effects that Zithromax has been linked to. In the medical community it seems that the sole focus of Zithromax are all of the pros they feel are important and none of the cons that could be so severe that the side effects result in death.

Some of the pros that lead to so many Zithromax prescriptions being provided each year are because it is so common and is very convenient. Prescriptions of Zithromax are so common that “Z-Pak” has become a household name. Because so many people are familiar with it they automatically assume that is safe for the whole family to use whenever they become ill without a question of the potential side effects they may face. Because the medical community does not make them aware of the side effects of Z-Pak, there is no reason to doubt the safety of Zithromax until tragedy strikes.

The convenience factor is another reason many feel Zithromax is overprescribed. The patient only has to take Z-Pak for five days when most other antibiotics require 10 days of use. It has always been a problem getting the patient to take the full prescription of antibiotics as many stop the antibiotics as soon as they feel better. It has been reported that when a person does not take their full prescription of antibiotics it makes the infection that much more resistant to treatment the next time an individual gets sick from that same virus. However, it still needs to be left up to the patient on whether the side effect risks Zithromax has to offer is worth the benefits.

There are a number of “cons” when it comes to Zithromax that the average user never becomes aware of until it is too late. Some of these severe side effects of Z-Pak include the following conditions:

  • Heart side effects
  • QT prolongation
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Torsades de pointes
  • Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS)

If you or someone you love has experienced any of these severe Zithromax side effects it is a strong possibility that you may be eligible to file your own Zithromax lawsuit.
