Yaz Increases Risk of Blood Clots & Related Medical Problems
By Robert J. Boumis

Yaz is a hormone-based contraceptive that contains drospirenone. This drug works by mimicking human hormones that essentially tell a woman’s body not to release an egg, preventing conception. Additionally, these same hormones can help mitigate certain hormone-related problems like acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Yaz was first approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001.
However, in the years since Yaz hit the market, more and more patients who used this pill have reported serious side effects. While all hormone-based contraceptives have some risk of blood clotting, it appears that Yaz and related drospirenone contraceptives have an even greater risk of this side effect.
Yaz Blood Clot Dangers
When blood clots form inside the body, the effect can be catastrophic. Often, the blood clots first form in the large blood vessels of the legs. This situation is called Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT. Once formed, the blood clot from Yaz DVT can move within the circulatory system, causing havoc.
For example, such a blood clot can break off and get lodged in the blood vessels of the brain. This can block off the supply of blood, as well as oxygen and nutrients and result in dying brain tissue. This is called a stroke.
Blood clots from deep vein thrombosis may also dislodge and travel to the lungs, causing a condition known as pulmonary embolism, which may result in a heart attack.
The FDA recommends that women who have a history of stroke, blood clots, and other risk factors do not take Yaz. However, some women who suffered from these serious health problems had no previous risk factors, other than having taken Yaz.
In FDA-funded studies of Yasmin and Yaz, it was found that women taking this type of birth control pill had a three-fold risk of developing serious blood clots. The FDA recommended that the labeling of Yaz and similar birth control products be altered to reflect this new information.
Drug injury lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of Yaz. These Yaz blood clot lawsuits allege that the drug manufacturers downplayed the risks associated with their product. The lawsuits further allege that the manufacturer did not provide patients and prescribing physicians with enough information to make an informed decision regarding their birth control, which in turn led to patients suffering blood clots and related medical problems.
