Woman Sues Bayer After Yaz Blood Clot Leaves Her Blind

By Jessica Tyner

Yasmin deep vein thrombosis (DVT)Yasmin is known for causing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in women — but sometimes, those already deadly complications can become even worse. Consider Carissa Ubersox of Wisconsin, who lost her vision because of the popular oral contraception. She was only 24 years old when she opted for Yaz birth control, just like thousands of other young women. Ubersox had no idea what she was in for.

Ubersox was engaged and worried about bloating and acne that her old birth control pill caused. She saw a commercial for Yasmin, which promised it could help with bloating and even offer clear skin as a perk. She switched to Yasmin leading up to her wedding because — like all brides — she wanted to look her best. Her heart stopped three months after starting Yasmin due to a blood clot. Ubersox’s nightmare perfectly coincided with Yasmin makers admitting their beneficial claims were a gross exaggeration.

Ubersox’s Brush with Death

In February 2008, Ubersox noticed that her legs were weak and shaking. Just 24 hours later, her family drove her to the hospital as she began having trouble breathing. Doctors quickly noticed that Ubersox had numerous blood clots in her legs — the most common place for DVT — and they had traveled up her body and into her lungs. This is where blots can become deadly and cause a pulmonary embolism. Ubersox is the victim of a double pulmonary embolism, but she didn’t make it to the hospital in time.

Ubersox’s heart stopped on the way to the hospital and her loved ones were sure she was dead. The doctors managed to revive her, but she was in a coma for nearly two weeks. Once doctors found out Ubersox was on Yasmin, they knew exactly what happened. Women have a much higher chance of developing blood clots while on Yaz or Yasmin, and pulmonary embolisms are sometimes the end result. When Ubersox woke up from the coma, she had gone completely blind.

Yasmin Blood Clot Risks

ABC News reports that women who take Yasmin are up to three times likelier to have blood clots compared to women on other forms of birth control. The FDA was also keeping an eye on Yasmin even back in 2008. There was an official report that stated Yasmin wasn’t any better at treating symptoms of PMS as any other oral contraception. Ubersox unknowingly risked her life and is permanently disabled because she trusted the marketing and makers of Yasmin.

Yasmin’s biggest platform was its supposed ability to treat acne. What woman doesn’t want beautiful skin as a perk for taking care of her sexual health? Nowadays, Yasmin no longer touts that claim, but it remains a very popular form of birth control. Ubersox has learned to live with her disability, but her heartbreaking story is a warning for the millions of other women considering which birth control is best for them.
