allopurinol-sjs-pillsA new lawsuit has been filed overs serious side effects of Invokana medicine. The lawsuit alleges that Invokana medicine, a treatment for diabetes, can cause severe complications including diabetic amputation.

More and more patients are filing lawsuits over complications from Invokana medicine. One recent plaintiff, Margarete G., says she suffered potentially deadly complications.

Margarete says she began taking Invokana medicine according to a doctor’s prescription in January 2016 in order to treat her diabetes. Unfortunately, less than a month after she began taking the drug, she was admitted to the hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis. As a direct result of taking Invokana medicine, the lawsuit alleges, she not only endured physical pain and suffering, but also emotional distress and economic loss, including medical expenses.

In the lawsuit, Margarete claims that her injuries were preventable, yet Janssen failed to conduct proper safety studies and give adequate warnings about the risks of Invokana medicine.

Margarete filed her Invokana medicine lawsuit on Dec. 15, 2017, in New Jersey. The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including failure to warn, design defect, negligence, breach of express warranty, fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation, unjust enrichment, and fraud, among others.

Background of Invokana Medicine

Invokana (also known by its generic name, canagliflozin) was first introduced to the drug market in 2013 to treat diabetes. Invokana medicine is manufactured by Janssen, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.

There are several major diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, of which Invokana medicine is one. SGLT2 inhibitors like Invokana are becoming increasingly popular.

Despite the growing use of Invokana medicine and other new diabetes drugs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a number of adverse event reports regarding Invokana complications. Recently, the FDA required that Janssen add a series of warnings to the Invokana label about these risks.

Invokana Medicine Side Effects

Invokana and other diabetes drugs have been connected with a number of dangerous side effects, from heart attack to kidney failure to diabetic ketoacidosis and even diabetic amputation.

The popular diabetes drug is associated with a number of Invokana complications, including, but not limited to:

  • Dehydration (dizziness, lightheadedness)
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Yeast infection of the penis
  • Low blood sugar
  • Serious allergic reaction
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Kidney failure
  • Diabetic amputation

Invokana lawsuits claim that the drug makers failed to adequately warn about these complications and their severity.

If you or someone you love has suffered due to severe Invokana side effects like kidney injury or diabetic amputation, you may be able to file a lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the side effects of Invokana, pursuing a lawsuit can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.

The Invokana Medicine Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-13123-BRM-LHG, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

In general, Invokana and Invokamet lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
