What is NuvaRing Birth Control & Its Risks?

By Christina Drury

NuvaRing birth controlNuvaRing is a vaginal ring birth control product that is inserted in the vagina near the cervix. Over a 21-day period, NuvaRing releases a combination of synthetic hormones, including ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and etonogestrel (a progestin). After three weeks the vaginal ring is removed for the menstruation period of one week. Following menstruation, another vaginal ring is inserted to begin the 21-day cycle again. NuvaRing prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus in order to prevent fertilization and by suppressing ovulation. NuvaRing was approved by the FDA and released into the market in 2001.
NuvaRing and Strokes

One of the many side effects associated with NuvaRing is the development of blood clots. Studies that were published in the British Medical Journal in 2009 reported that those who took third- and fourth-generation contraceptives, such as NuvaRing, have an increased risk of developing blood clots. Users of third- and fourth-generation contraceptives are twice as likely to develop blood clots when compared to those who take second generation contraceptives. Once a blood clot is formed there is a risk of the clot coming loose and traveling up to the brain and causing a stroke. If the patient survives the stroke, there can be severe repercussions that can lead to lifelong health injuries, problems and paralysis.

Lawsuits against NuvaRing

Several lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of NuvaRing, citing allegations that the product has been linked to an increased risk of stroke in users. Among the many plaintiffs are Misty Liebert and Jackie Bozicev. Liebert alleges that she developed a NuvaRing blood clot in her lungs. Bozicev died in December of 2007 from a sudden blood clot, also allegedly caused by the use of NuvaRing.  A wrongful death lawsuit was launched on Bozicev’s behalf. Another NuvaRing blood clot lawsuit was filed in July of 2010 which alleged that a woman using the vaginal ring died from a blood clot after just five months of using the product. In many of these lawsuits, the maker of the vaginal ring is accused of failing to provide accurate warnings about the increased risk of blood clots.
