Eliquis is a popular anticoagulant manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb used to prevent stroke, however the side effects of Eliquis are often more serious than consumers may think.
Eliquis, also known as apixaban, is blood thinning medication first introduced in 2012 to prevent blood clots and stroke in patients who were at high risk for stroke as a result of lower body extremity joint replacement.
It joins a newer class of anticoagulants that also include Pradaxa and Xarelto designed to compete with the older drug, Coumadin (warfarin).
One of the major problems with the approval of Eliquis was the faulty ARISTOTLE report. The study that Eliquis’ approval was based on was fraught with problems. Study subjects received the wrong information, patient’s data was altered, but perhaps most alarming is that adverse bleeding events were not reported.
Serious Side Effects of Eliquis
When Eliquis came on to the market, it was promoted as a drug much better than warfarin, the standard blood thinner that had been used by patients and doctors for many years. Eliquis’ draw was that it did not require regular monitoring and adherence to a strict diet.
But the side effects of Eliquis, to many patients and physicians, outweigh the benefits of the drug.
The most serious side effects of Eliquis are associated with uncontrollable bleeding events. These adverse events are increased when coupled with taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin.
Other drugs, such as selective seretonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and seretonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), also should not be taken with Eliquis as they increase the possibility of bleeding as well.
The problem with Eliquis is that it does not have an antidote for uncontrollable bleeding episodes. Any blood thinner increases the risk of hemorrhage but drugs like warfarin have a known antidote. Eliquis does not have an antidote which makes cases of uncontrollable bleeding serious and life-threatening.
Some other side effects of Eliquis include:
- Bruising more easily
- Developing skin rash
- Internal bleeding
- Brain hemorrhaging
However, if an Eliquis user experiences any of the following rare but serious side effects of Eliquis, he or she should seek medical help. These include:
- blood in the eyes
- blood in the urine
- bloody or black, tarry stools
- bruising or purple areas on the skin
- coughing up blood
- dizziness
- fainting
- fast heartbeat
- hives, itching, skin rash
- nausea and vomiting
- nosebleeds
- severe stomach pain
- vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
The package insert warnings for the side effects of Eliquis also mention increased bruising, menstrual bleeding that is longer or heavier than normal, unusual bleeding from the gums and unexpected pain, swelling or joint pain.
It also notes that one of the possible side effects of Eliquis is a skin rash or severe allergic reaction. The warning also urges users to contact a doctor if they feel tightness in their chest, experience swelling of their face or tongue, have trouble breathing or swallowing or feel dizzy or faint.
