The Problems with Homeolab USA Kids Relief Cough & Cold Syrup

By John Curran

Homeolab USA Kids Relief Cough ColdWhen one sees the ingredient list for a homeopathic remedy like Homeolab USA Kids Relief Cough & Cold, it may seem very confusing. Things are not labeled in milligrams or ounces, but rather with C’s and Xs’. It may be confusing, but understanding the actual ratios will help to explain why some people believe these products are homeopathic scams.

Arnica Montana is listed at 3C, as is Bryonia. This actually means that they contain one microgram per milliliter, or 0.1 milligrams per each bottle. For reference, a similar bottle of cough syrup with non-homeopathic ingredients would contain 100 milligrams of cough suppressant and 2000 milligrams of expectorant chemicals. There is no indication that these materials would work so well in much tinier concentrations. All of the other ingredients are listed as less than one milligram.

In another comparison, a standard pill of naproxen sodium, or Aleve, is 200 milligrams, and many ibuprofen pills come in 200 milligram variants. Prescription strength pain relievers can have three or more times that for ibuprofen variants. In fact, prescription drugs for a variety of conditions usually contain at least one milligram of the active ingredient.

Even if it was the case that the homeopathic ingredients were effective at those levels, the materials have problematic scientific data supporting their use. Arnica montana is also known as wolf’s bane, and can be poisonous in large amounts. Its only proven use is as an anti-inflammatory, and would require it to be 50 percent of the entire product. The only useful ingredient would be the citric acid, and there is no indication on the label of how much is in the Homeolab USA Kids Relief Cough & Cold syrup.

The other ingredients in Homeolab USA Kids Relief Cough & Cold syrup have similar problems, which is why many people are starting to wonder if it’s a homeopathic scam, especially if it doesn’t help with treating cold and flu symptoms like dry cough or loosening mucous.
