Invokana-risks

A Tennessee resident filed an Invokana kidney injury lawsuit against Janssen, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.

The plaintiff, Feeby C., filed this lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals over an alleged Invokana kidney injury she suffered after taking Invokana to treat her diabetes. According to the lawsuit, the use of Invokana led directly to serious side effects, including Invokana kidney injury.

According to the Janssen lawsuit, Feeby was prescribed Invokana in order to treat her diabetes through the regulation of glycemic control in June 2015.

However, a few months after beginning to take Invokana, Feeby suffered from an Invokana kidney injury on February 12, 2016. Feeby’s Invokana kidney injury led to serious complications that have persisted since.

The lawsuit alleges that Feeby’s Invokana kidney injury has led to pain and suffering and emotional distress as well as the loss of enjoyment of life and economic loss from medical expenses and future treatment.

The plaintiff claims that she was unaware of the potential for Invokana kidney injury associated with this drug. Feeby claims that, had she been adequately informed and warned, she would have chosen a safer alternative, avoiding Invokana kidney injury altogether.

Indeed, the lawsuit alleges that Janssen not only failed to warn the plaintiff, the medical community and other consumers about Invokana’s side effects, but “misrepresented that Invokana is a safe and effective treatment for type 2 diabetes,” when it can actually cause serious and permanent side effects.

The Invokana kidney injury lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including design defect, failure to warn, negligence, gross negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, fraud and others.

Invokana Background

Invokana (also known as canagliflozin) was first introduced as a diabetes drug in 2013 and is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

Invokana is one of several major diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2, or SGLT2 inhibitors, a class of drugs that has grown increasingly popular in recent years.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a growing number of adverse event reports regarding the drug, and has required Janssen to add a series of warnings to the Invokana label about severe Invokana defects and injuries.

The warning urged users to be aware of diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, respiratory problems and vomiting.

According to this lawsuit, Janssen Pharmaceuticals actively minimized risks and overplayed the drug as safe and effective despite known reports of severe Invokana injuries.

Filing a Lawsuit Over Severe Invokana Defects

Invokana lawsuits claim that the drug makers failed to adequately warn about Invokana defects and, in some cases, claim that the company actively withheld information about Invokana risks from both the medical community and the general public.

If you or someone you love has suffered due to a severe Invokana kidney injury or other side effect, you may be able to file a lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the suffering caused by an Invokana kidney injury, pursuing an Invokana lawsuit could result in financial compensation that would help with medical expenses and lost wages.

The Invokana Kidney Injury Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-02092-SHL-TMP, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.

In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
