Susceptible Patients May Suffer Zithromax Stevens Johnson Syndrome
By Robert J. Boumis

In SJS, a drug like Zithromax triggers a misfiring of the immune system. Susceptible patients undergo an autoimmune reaction. In this type of reaction, the patient’s own body attacks itself. On rare occasions, SJS may be triggered by infection or cancer. But in most cases, pharmaceuticals like Zithromax trigger the reaction.
When Zithromax Stevens Johnson Syndrome begins, the patient may experience flu-like symptoms. Often, these early symptoms are mistaken for an infection and physicians may prescribe antibiotics. However, the reaction typically progresses to more serious symptoms. The patient begins to develop a painful skin rash. This rash usually attacks the skin and mucus membranes. In some cases, the reaction may also affect the eyes, and possibly even the internal organs. The rash can lead to painful sores and ulcers. The inflammation and breaks in the skin leaves the patients vulnerable to secondary infections.
Other complications from Stevens Johnson Syndrome include disfiguring scaring, and possibly even more serious problems like blindness and organ damage. These side effects can be permanent, and forever alter a victim’s quality of life.
In about 10 percent of cases, SJS progresses to a more severe form of the reaction, called toxic epidermal necrolysis or TEN. TEN is even more serious than SJS. In these patients, the immune reaction damages the skin so badly that patches slough off. This damage closely resembles burns, and is often treated in burn wards. Patients with this type of damage risk the same complications as burns, including dehydration, hypothermia, scarring, and extreme vulnerability to lethal secondary infections. Almost half of people who develop TEN die from the reaction.
Zithromax lawsuits have been filed against drug manufacturers by SJS patients and their survivors. These lawsuits allege that manufacturers knew, or should have known about the serious risks associated with their products. Zithromax SJS lawsuits further allege that manufacturers downplayed these risks, preventing patients and health care professional from having the information they needed to make informed decisions regarding their medical care. Plaintiffs in these cases seek damages related to complications suffered after taking drugs like Zithromax or others drugs.
If you or someone you care about took Zithromax and went on to suffer from a serious reaction like SJS and TEN, your life may feel totally out of control. You may feel overwhelmed and not sure what to do next. But you do have rights, and there are steps that you can take to get back control of you life.
