Study: Older Hip Implant Side Effects Much Less Than New Metal Hip Replacement Devices

By John Curran

hip implants side effects class action lawsuit attorneysMetal on metal hip implant side effects were supposed to be reduced compared to older models of hip implants thanks to stronger materials and improved designs. Unfortunately, as DePuy hip implant class action lawsuit attorneys will attest, hip replacement devices from multiple manufacturers seem to fail at a very high rate. The prestigious British medical journal the Lancet argues that new ideas aren’t always best.

In fact, using a polyethylene or plastic liner between the ball and socket as part of a total hip replacement (THR) actually reduces the failure rate compared to Stryker metal on metal hip implants, the research found. While the manufacturers wanted to maintain a portion of the hip joint, the THR was actually one-sixth as likely to fail as the newer metal hip implants in women, and half as likely to fail with men.

One researcher in the study said she would refuse to use resurfacing and metal on metal hip implants with any female patient she had. Unfortunately for metal hip implant class action lawsuit attorneys in the United States, the Lancet study was just released in the UK this week. In addition, even though some metal hip implant products from companies like DePuy have been recalled, other metal on metal hip implants received approval through a streamlined process. That’s in spite of the fact that the “revised” products didn’t have to go through the full process based on approval of a recalled product.

Failure rates of metal on metal hip implants are more significant than those for many other hip replacement products. They are extremely difficult to remove and replace. In addition, metal hip replacement systems like a Stryker hip implant can rupture and leach heavy metals into the system. That means that all-metal hip implants from manufacturers like DePuy can poison the body and lead to circulatory and cardiovascular side effects as well.
