Study Links Vaginal Birth Control Rings to Severe Side Effects

The European Journal of Contraception and Reproductive Health Care recently published a study that vaginal birth control rings are becoming as acceptable to use as the more traditional form of oral birth control pills. The December 2012 study has been tracking the use and popularity of the vaginal ring since its introduction onto the market, over 10 years ago. Based on several different factors, the study included effectiveness, patient satisfaction and safety. The study concluded that many women actually preferred the vaginal ring to oral contraceptives, but negative side effects and complications caused by vaginal rings such as NuvaRing have been a large factor in the discontinuation of the product.
Severe Side Effects Linked to NuvaRing
According to a study conducted and released by Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2010, vaginal ring devices like NuvaRing have been linked to numerous side effects, including vaginitis, leucorrhea, headaches and severe discomfort. Regrettably, the seriousness of these NuvaRing side effects and injuries continue to grow. A report issued by The National Institutes of Health stated that the NuvaRing may increase a woman’s risk of developing life-threatening conditions. These risks include:
* Liver Tumors
* Breast or Liver Cancer
* Heart Attack
* Stroke
* Serious Blood Clots
The report also stated that non-cancerous liver tumors could burst which could potentially lead to severe internal bleeding.
Risks of NuvaRing Lead to Multiple Lawsuits
The risks that have been associated with NuvaRing are what have led to numerous lawsuits being filed against the vaginal ring device manufacturer. According to data that was presented to the FDA in October of 2012, close to 5 million NuvaRing prescriptions were issued every year between 2007 and 2010. Most medications have minor side effects that may occur; however, it is reasonably expected that multiple patients should not suffer from severe side effects caused by the same medication or medical device.
