Signs & Symptoms of a NuvaRing Blood Clot Injury

By Sarah Pierce

NuvaRing blood clot symptomsSeveral studies have confirmed what Plaintiffs in NuvaRing blood clot lawsuits already know: using NuvaRing can significantly increase your risk of developing a serious blood clot complication like pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. A recent study published in the British Medical Journal in June 2012 showed NuvaRing users are 90% more likely to have a dangerous blood clot than women who use the pill. If you’re using NuvaRing, knowing the signs and symptoms of a NuvaRing blood clot can help save your life.

NuvaRing is one of the most popular forms of non-pill birth control and was approved for use by the FDA in October 2001. The flexible plastic ring is inserted into the vagina and placed near the cervix, where it releases a continuous stream of hormones over a 21-day period. These hormones, synthetic estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (etonogestrel), work by suppressing ovulation and by thickening the cervical mucus to prevent fertilization. While these hormone levels are low, these synthetic hormones have been linked to an increase risk of blood clots because they change a person’s blood clotting system. If a blood clot forms in the legs, pelvis or other deep vein, it can dislodge and travel to the lungs and cause sudden blockage.

NuvaRing Blood Clot Injuries
Hundreds of NuvaRing lawsuits have cited serious blood clot injuries like pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis and venous thromboembolism. These serious conditions can lead to a heart attack or stroke when a blood clot becomes lodged in a blood vessel leading to the heart or brain.
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blockage of one or more arteries in the lungs. PE is commonly caused by blood clots that travel to the lungs from another part of the body, such as the legs.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is caused by a blood clot in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in the legs or pelvis. DVT can cause leg pain and swelling, but sometimes doesn’t have any symptoms at all. People with DVT are at risk for one of the blood clots dislodging and traveling to the lungs, heart or brain, putting them at risk for pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke.
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition that includes both PE and DVT.
Signs of NuvaRing Blood Clot Injuries
There are certain telltale signs that you’ve developed a NuvaRing blood clot, which should not be ignored. Ignoring the signs of a blood clot could be life threatening.
Signs and symptoms of NuvaRing pulmonary embolism include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing (which may produce bloody or blood-streaked sputum), wheezing, swelling of one or more legs, clammy or bluish-colored skin, excessive sweating, rapid or irregular heartbeat, weak pulse, lightheadedness or fainting.
Signs and symptoms of NuvaRing deep vein thrombosis include leg swelling, including swelling of the ankle and foot; leg pain that often starts in the calf and can feel like cramping; warmth over the affected area; and changes in your skin color, such as turning pale, red or blue.
If you develop any of these NuvaRing blood clot symptoms, seek medical attention right away.
