Side Effects of GranuFlo & NaturaLyte Spark Lawsuits

By Andrea Gressman

GranuFlo recall lawsuitSerious GranuFlo and NaturaLyte side effects that resulted in a number of fatalities led to a June 2012 recall. The FDA issued a Class 1 recall, which is the most serious type of recall that can be issued in the U.S. The FDA began their investigation after an internal memo was leaked from the manufacturers of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte to their dialysis clinics. After the FDA completed their investigation it was determined that a recall was the best course of action. Since the GranuFlo/NaturaLyte recall was put in place, a large number of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte lawsuits have been filed by the victims and the victims’ families.

GranuFlo vs. NaturaLyte

GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are both used for kidney dialysis treatment. They are both additives used to help reduce the amount of acid in the dialysis patient’s blood stream. They are also both manufactured by Fresenius.

The differences between NaturaLyte and GranuFlo are that GranuFlo is a powder and NaturaLyte is a liquid. NaturaLyte must be mixed with purified water and sodium bicarbonate and GranuFlo is made from active ingredients that create bicarbonate.

Potentially Fatal GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Side Effects

The main issue with NaturaLyte and GranuFlo is that they both contain a higher level of the active ingredients than other products used for the same dialysis treatment. However, the medical professionals were not made aware of this and did not mix the concentrates at the correct dosage. Because of this, the patients were being administered a much stronger dose compared to other products, which led to severe and life threatening side effects. These side effects include the following:

* Cardiac arrhythmia
* Low blood pressure
* Hypercapnia (high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood)
* Hypoxemia (low blood oxygen)
* Hypokalemia (low potassium)

If these side effects go untreated they could cause the following:

* Cardiovascular problems
* Metabolic alkalosis
* Heart attack
* Sudden death
* Stroke

Filing a GranuFlo Lawsuit in Order to Receive Compensation for Negative Side Effects

In the internal memo issued by Fresenius in November of 2011, it was reported that there had been 941 GranuFlo and NaturaLyte side effect deaths in 2010 alone. These deaths were of patients using GranuFlo and NaturaLyte and they were all complications of what is referred to as “bicarbonate overdose”.  However, this information was not made public until June of 2012 when the GranuFlo and NaturaLyte recall was put in place. Now, with families just realizing the potential reason why their loved one experienced a heart attack there is expected to be many more GranuFlo and NaturaLyte lawsuits filed.
