Side Effects of Generic Dilantin Put to the Test

By John Curran

Dilantin side effectsThe federal Food and Drug Administration has received complaints about Wellbutrin and other drugs, or rather the relative efficacy of their generic versions. Now a research team from the University of Cincinnati will test to see whether or not generic Dilantin side effects are worse than those of the brand name, and more importantly whether or not the dosages are as effective as the original medication.

The latter may be even more important because of the neurological impact, as well as the risk for Stevens Johnson Syndrome side effects that many epileptic drugs carry. If the drugs are not efficacious, then epilepsy specialists have to prescribe more of it, increasing the chances of Dilantin neurological conditions such as cerebral cortex damage and sedation. If the fillers used as buffer material are different and causing problems, no one knows for sure what impact that will have.

Part of the problem is that there are basically two front-line treatments used by epilepsy specialists: the aforementioned Dilantin and Lamictal. While the interactions between those and other drugs are well known, it is unclear what the fillers’ impact would be on epileptic patients. It is why the research study is so critical, although the results will be several years in coming. That the FDA is acting on it with relative speed is a sign of the potential risks, as the agency never acts with any haste in terms of testing drug safety.

Patients who are on epilepsy drugs need to be aware of the risks of Stevens Johnson Syndrome side effects due to the risk of skin death and long rehabilitation periods. However, the new problems related to generics and their potential differences from the brand name medication could also raise eyebrows once the data is released. For a population where only half seek treatment, this could set back adherence by epileptic patients even further.

People who have dealt with problems while taking anticonvulsants may wish to consult a Dilantin lawsuit lawyer. A consultation with one is available at the Dilantin Stevens Johnson (SJS) & Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) Class Action Lawsuit Investigation. It costs nothing and could help patients understand what legal remedies may be available to them. Recovery from many of these conditions is difficult and time-consuming. Getting started with a Dilantin lawsuit lawyer may be the first step in getting better in some comfort.
