Pradaxa Gastrointestinal Bleeding Lawsuit Joins MDL

By Andrea Gressman

PradaxaA new Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuit was filed alleging that the plaintiff experienced severe side effects as a direct result of using the medication. The plaintiff, Ethel Mae Jackson, filed her Pradaxa lawsuit on October 12, 2012 and subsequently joined the Pradaxa lawsuit multidistrict litigation (MDL) that is being held in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. It joins over 100 Pradaxa lawsuits have been consolidated to expedite the litigation process.

The Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuit claims that the plaintiff experienced severe side effects, including Pradaxa gastrointestinal bleeding, due to the defectiveness of the medication. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals has been named as the defendant in the Pradaxa lawsuit as they are the manufacturers and distributors of Pradaxa and the plaintiff feels they are directly responsible.

The Pradaxa lawsuit goes on to claim that if Ms. Jackson would have known of the side effects of Pradaxa she would have never taken Pradaxa to begin with. The plaintiff has brought a number of charges against Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, including the following:

* Design defect
* Failure to warn
* Fraudulent concealment
* Negligence

The plaintiff seeks damages for a number the following:

* Diminished quality of life
* Mental anguish
* Past medical expenses
* Present and future medical treatment
* Punitive damages
* Physical pain

It has been stated in the Pradaxa lawsuit that the medication made the plaintiff’s injuries more severe because it kept her body stopping the internal bleeding on its own.

Pradaxa Lawsuit Plaintiff Hospitalized for Severe Gastrointestinal Bleeding Side Effects

The Pradaxa lawsuit states that Ms. Jackson received her Pradaxa prescription in April 2011.  Just one month after receiving the prescription she had to be hospitalized for several weeks due to severe Pradaxa gastrointestinal bleeding. In order to stop the uncontrolled bleeding Ms. Jackson had to receive multiple blood transfusions. The plaintiff then had to spend many months in a rehabilitation center as a part of her recovery.

Another claim that the plaintiff has made is that Boehringer Ingelheim used marketing tactics that were deceptive because they did not disclose the potential side effect dangers associated with Pradaxa. Ms. Jackson goes on to claim that the manufacturer did not provide a sufficient Pradaxa side effect warning to patients or the medical community in general in regards to the fact that there is not an antidote in place in order to stop internal bleeding that Pradaxa has been known to cause, unlike there is with other similar medications. It has also been claimed that Pradaxa’s packaging does not contain any type of warning regarding the potential severe side effect it can be responsible for that can be permanent, severely debilitating, and has even led to fatalities.

The Pradaxa MDL is referred to as MDL No. 2385, In Re: Pradaxa Liability Litigation, Southern District of Illinois.
