Overview of Mirena IUD Side Effects
By Amanda Antell

Mirena was introduced by Bayer and approved by the FDA in 2000 as an effective long-acting birth control that disrupts the sperm and egg. Although Mirena has been advertised as a safe and reversible form of birth control, many women have had to face sudden and extreme health concerns. These potential Mirena side effects include:
- Perforation of the Uterine Wall
- Migration of the IUD to Outside the Uterus
- Expulsion of the Mirena IUD
- Infection
- Complications that Result in Surgery to Remove Mirena IUD
Currently, thousands of Mirena lawsuits are being filed against Bayer, alleging that the company knew or should have known about the risks of these side effects but failed to provide adequate warnings for women or the medical community.
Despite the serious risks and tribulations to their customers, Bayer aggressively promoted Mirena IUD as a hassle-free form of birth control. Some Mirena injury lawyers say this may constitute false and misleading promotional statements, as well as withholding information about the risk of their product.
Potential serious side effects of the Mirena IUD may include:
- Severe cramps or pelvic pain
- Extreme dizziness
- Heavy or ongoing vaginal bleeding, vaginal sores, vaginal discharge that is watery, foul-smelling discharge, or otherwise unusual;
- Severe pain in side or lower stomach;
- Pale skin, weakness, easy bruising or bleeding;
- Fever, chills, or other signs of infection;
- Pain during sexual intercourse;
- Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden or severe headache, confusion, problems with vision, sensitivity to light;
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Less serious side effects of Mirena may include:
- Irregular menstrual periods, changes in bleeding patterns or flow
- Breakthrough bleeding or heavier menstrual bleeding during the first few weeks after device insertion
- Back pain
- Nausea, vomiting, bloating;
- Breast tenderness or pain;
- Weight gain, acne, changes in hair growth;
- Mood changes, loss of interest in sex;
- Mild itching, skin rash; or
- Puffiness in face, hands, ankles, or feet
This is not a complete list of side effects. Talk to your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any other type of abnormality after inserting the Mirena IUD. Though an allergic reaction is rare, seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
