Onfi, a prescription medication that used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, is prescribed to people as young as two years old. While there’s a relatively long list of potential Onfi side effects on the website, Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) isn’t among them.
“Onfi can make you sleepy or dizzy and can slow your thinking and make you clumsy which may get better over time,” is the primary warning offered by the drug makers. “Onfi can cause withdrawal symptoms,” and “Onfi can be abused and caused dependence,” the site also warns. For those who are considering an Onfi regimen, these potential side effects may seem manageable.
Most people don’t know much about SJS unless they personally know someone who’s been impacted by it. Generally speaking, SJS is a serious allergic skin reaction. SJS starts with a rash, which can blossom overnight into blisters. SJS doesn’t have a cure, but the symptoms can be treated until it runs its course and the skin begins to heal itself. However, sometimes SJS can cause blindness, permanent disfigurement and even death. Nobody is immune to SJS, and just because a person has taken a drug before with no side effects doesn’t mean they have an immunity to getting SJS from that drug in the future. The Onfi website warns, “Serious skin reactions have been seen when Onfi is taken with other medicines and may require stopping its use.
A serious skin reaction can happen at any time during your treatment with Onfi. Call your healthcare provider immediately if you have skin blisters, peeling rash, sores in the mouth, hives or any other allergic reaction.” This warning doesn’t specify Stevens Johnson Syndrome and, according to SJS sufferers, doesn’t adequately warn consumers about how serious the condition may be. It also states that “skin reactions” occur when Onfi is taken “with other medicines,” which some may construe as a bad cocktail, and not necessarily the fault of Onfi.
Some people have taken drugs linked to SJS, such as Onfi, for years with no adverse reactions before they develop an allergy to the medication. There are also a number of doctors who have never seen SJS in person, and it’s easy to misdiagnose it as a skin rash if they don’t know what to look out for. People depend on proper warning labels to be forewarned, make the best decisions and know what to watch for when taking medications. Without appropriate Onfi warning labels, consumers could be taking drugs that are more dangerous than they think.
